The title Earl of Holland was created in the Peerage of England on September 24, 1649 for Henry Rich, 1st Baron Kensington, younger son of Robert Rich, 1st Earl of Warwick.
His son Robert Rich, 2nd Earl of Holland became Earl of Warwick in 1673, and Earl of Holland became a subsidiary title for those earls until both titles became extinct in 1759.

This authority of Holland was, however, inure than counterbalancad by the extensive powers with which the stadholder princes of Orange were invested; and the chief crises in the internal Contest history of the Dutch republic are to be found in between the struggles for supremacy between two, in reality, the Prin- different prificiples of government.
The office of stadholder e was abolished, and John de Witt, the grand pensionary (Raad-Pensionaris) of Holland, for two decades held n his hands all the threads of administration, and occupied the same position of undisputed authority in the councils of the land as Oldenbarneveldt had done at the beginning of the century.
Holland was foundedin 1847 by Dutch settlers, under the leadership of the Rev.A. Van Raalte, and was chartered as a city in 1867.

In 1342, Henry accompanied Edward on his expedition into Brittany, having in his retinue five bannerets, fifty knights, with a proportional number of esquires and archers; and, during the Siege of Vannes, was constituted one of the commissioners to conclude a truce for three years.
The Earl of Derby was also, in that year, one of the commissioners sent to Rome to treat, in the presence of the Pope, for a peace with Philip of Valois concerning the King's claim to the French Crown.
The Earl was subsequently joined in several commissions to treat with France; and, on the 25th September 1348, was constituted the King's Lieutenant as well in the parts of Flanders and Calais, as elsewhere in France.

On the 1ith of September he was created earl of Holland, and in 1625 was sent on two further missions, first to Paris to arrange a treaty between Louis XIII.
Clarendon styles him a very well-bred man and a fine gentleman in good times.1 He was evidently a man of shallow character, devoid of ability, raised far above his merits and hopelessly unfit for the great times in which he lived.
Lord Holland married Elizabeth, daughter and heiress of Sir Walter Cope of Kensington, and, besides several daughters, had four sons, of whom the eldest, Robert, succeeded him as 2nd earl of Holland, and inherited the earldom of Warwick in 1673.

Rich was more qualified to succeed as a courtier than as a soldier, and his handsome person and winning manners made his rise rapid: ‘His features and pleasant aspect equalled the most beautiful women’.
In Mar and Jul 1642 the parliament chose Holland to bear its declarations to the King, but in each case Charles received him with pointed disfavour, by which the Earl ‘was transported from his natural temper and gentleness into passion and animosity against the King and his ministers’.
During the early part of 1643 Holland was one of the leaders of the peace party in the lords, and in Aug he endeavoured to induce Essex to back the peace propositions with the weight of the army.

 Sir Robert Rich
Sir Robert Rich, 2nd Earl of Warwick, colonial administrator and admiral, was the eldest son of Robert Rich, earl of Warwick and his wife Penelope Rich, and succeeded to the title in 1619.
Meanwhile in England Warwick opposed the forced loan of 1626, the payment of ship-money and Laud's church policy, and with his brother the first lord Holland came to be recognized as one of the heads of the Puritans.
Dismissed from office on the abolition of the House of Lords in 1649, he retired from public life, but was intimately associated with Oliver Cromwell, whose daughter Frances married his grandson and heir Robert Rich in 1657.

Robert Rich was not the most pleasant of people and was described as being of a foul and vindictive disposition and of nasty temper.
To be fair to Lord Rich he did abide by the conditions of the divorce settlement whereas she didn't.
What Rich was not told was that despite the fact that Frances received £1,700 a year from Sir George's considerable estate (mega - bucks in modern money) she actually owned no property except the house in Snarford as it all went to two nephews.

Henry and Cora Holland, Indianapolis, IN I have a old bible that was given as a wedding present to Henry and Cora Holland or Halland.
Could she be the same Sarah that was the child of Enos Holland in Thomas County, VA? According to the 1850 Federal Census of Thomas County, there was a Sarah Holland in that household that was 10 years old.
Hollands in Lenoir County, NC I am researching a little-known branch of the Holland family tree.

L&M note: “The Earl of Holland (then Viscount Kensington) had shared with the Earl of Carlisle the conduct of these negotiations of 1624-5.
His descendants included Earls of Bradford who still own a great deal of the land roundabout and are commemorated in Bradford Road and Newport Street.
I’ve corrected the “Lord Holland” link — it was going to the correct page (for the 1st Earl of Holland) but that page had the wrong name, “Rich” rather than “Sir Henry”.

Eventually he was captured and executed by Parliament.
