SHERWOOD, MARY MARTHA (1775-1851), English author, was born at Stanford, Worcestershire, on the 6th of May 1775, the daughter of the Rev. George Butt, D.D., then.
In 1803 she married her cousin, Captain Henry Sherwood, an officer in the British army, and subsequently accompanied him to India, where she devoted herself to charitable work and to writing.

Edith Helen Sherwood Born in 1871 and died in 1967, school teacher for many years, lived in Caversham, Reading with her mother and sister until the latter’s marriage to William Augustus Doherty in 1924-she lived with them until they both died.
This means that John Sherwood would have died somewhere between 1866 (Harriet's birth) and 1881 (as per the census) I am hoping that someone will be kind enough to look up the 1871 census to see if John Sherwood was in the picture or if her father was listed as William COLE.
Henry William Sherwood's fathers name was William Henry and his mother was Eliza but I have not found them anywhere yet.

Sherwood accompanied her husband to India and threw herself into teaching and evangelical work, as well as continuing to write stories such as Little Henry and his bearer Boosy (1814) which was to prove one of her most popular works.
Her later writings included The history of Henry Milner (1822-37) and Lady of the manor (1825-1829) which consisted of no less than seven volumes of "conversations on the subject of confirmation, intended for the use of the middle and higher ranks of young females".
Sherwood's fame as an evangelical writer was so great that she was invited to meet William Wilberforce and Elizabeth Fry.

The bulk of the Emmet Family papers were donated by Rosamond Sherwood, daughter of Rosina Emmet Sherwood (via Katharine Emmet Bramwell of New York), by Rosamond Sherwood's estate (via F. Douglas Cochrane, executor, from Boston), and by Rosamond's nieces, Virginia Sherwood and Julia Shipway in 1988-1991.
Before her marriage to Arthur Murray Sherwood in 1887, Rosina established a studio in New York and continued to submit illustrations to various publications.
The travel scrapbook from 1876-1877 was also compiled by Rosina Emmet Sherwood, and contains portrait sketches, drawings of her dogs, genre scenes and travel views, in addition to photographs of travels, friends, actors, and the ship "Scythia." This scrapbook was lent for microfilming and returned to the donor.
