Henry Smith Pritchett (April 16 1857 – August 28 1939) was a U.S. astronomer and educator.
Pritchett was born in Fayette, MO, and attended Pritchett College (of Glasgow, MO) receiving the A.B. in 1875.
Pritchett Lounge, on the second floor of Walker Memorial at MIT is named in his honor.

Pritchett argued that denominational influences on colleges made for unsound education, encouraged the existence of too many small schools, were institutionally inefficient, and compromised the public good.
Emile Durkheim and Adam Smith are famous for their studies of the process of economic specialization.
Adam Smith was particularly enthusiastic about this process, which Durkheim called the "division of labor", because he saw in it the means for dramatic economic progress, as described in his well known book An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations (1776).

Correspondence of Henry S. Pritchett (1901-1910) Subjects: Education Educational change Medical education--Canada Medical education--United States Research Occupations: Authors Educators Reformers Administrative Information Provenance: The papers of Abraham Flexner, educational reformer and author, were given to the Library of Congress by Flexner in 1954.
Impressed with Flexner's critical writings on higher education, Carnegie Foundation president Henry S. Pritchett hired Flexner in 1908 to study and report on the status of education in the medical profession.
The series also includes correspondence of Henry S. Pritchett pertaining to his service as a civilian representative on the Light-House Board of the Department of Commerce and Labor from 1901 to 1910.

HENRY C. Henry C. Olsen, who was engaged in flight checking the Reno aeronautical chart, was killed in an automobile accident near Reno, Nevada, on April 21, his 35th birthday.
Henry Smith Pritchett, who was the 9th Superintendent of this Survey, serving from December 1, 1897 to November 30, 1900, died from bronchial pneumonia at his home in Santa Barbara, California, on the morning of August 28, 1939, at the age of 82.
Pritchett was president of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching (1906-1930).

As a Baptist minister, the Rev. Smith served as pastor of Fairview Baptist Church from 1942 to 1945, and from 1945 to 1966, he served as pastor of Berea Baptist Church in Asheville, N.C. The Rev. Smith had been a resident of Fort Myers, Fla., since 1966.
The Rev. Smith was the great-great-great-grandson of Henry Smith, Revolutionary War veteran and pioneer of Franklin County.

In the report Flexner made to Henry Smith Pritchett, Ph.D., president of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and former professor of astronomy at Washington University, he said that one of two courses must be adopted: "The department must be either abolished or reorganized."
Pritchett mailed the report to Robert S. Brookings, a St. Louis merchant who was president of the Board of Directors of Washington University.
Brookings was shocked and immediately went to New York to see Flexner, demanding proof that the conditions were as bad as described.

 Who's Who within the Waller Family
Colonel Waller was with General Washington at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown, after which he returned to his home in Henry County, lived the life of a gentleman planter, and served his county and state until his death on November 18, 1814.
His father removed with his family to Warren county, Mo., in 1835, where Carr attended the common school, and in 1844 he began to teach in private schools In 1846 he became a licentiate in the ministry of the Methodist church, and was for many years a member of the Missouri annual conference.
He was married in Pike county, Mo., Oct. 17, 1849, to Bettie Susan, daughter of Byrd and Sarah Hatcher (Woodson) Smith of Danville, Va.; she died at Glasgow, Mo., Nov. 27, 1872.

Henry Carr Pritchett, teacher and administrator, son of William Ira and Martha Ann (Hubbard) Pritchett, was born on August 12, 1852, in Warren County, Missouri.
In 1867 the family moved to Glasgow, Missouri, where, in 1873, Henry graduated from Pritchett Institute.
He received his M.A. two years later, although he had meanwhile started his career of teaching.

In November 1922 the Community Arts Association received from the Carnegie Corporation a grant of $25,000 a year for five years, the money to be distributed among the four branches.
The grant was secured through the efforts of Dr. Henry Smith Pritchett, President of the Carnegie Corporation of New York and, at that time, a resident of Santa Barbara.
After the 1925 earthquake which severely damaged the school, the Carnegie Corporation gave the association an additional $25,000 for the construction of a new school and, at the same time, extended the original grant through October 1, 1930.
