Henry studied at the University of Georgia, but, forced by illness to end his formal studies, returned to Charleston.
Timrod soon followed into the military, but illness prevented much service, and he was sent home.
Henry's friend, P. Hayne, posthumously edited and published The Poems of Henry Timrod, with more of his poems in 1873, including his Ode to the Confederate Dead at Magnolia Cemetery and The Cotton Boll.

A col­lect­ion of his po­etry was pub­lished in 1860, but with the ad­vent of the Amer­i­can ci­vil war, Tim­rod en­list­ed in the Con­fed­er­ate army.
Paul Ham­il­ton Hayne pub­lished The Po­ems of Hen­ry Tim­rod post­hu­mous­ly in 1873.

Born in Charleston in 1828, Timrod was quick to feel the poetic instinct and came by it naturally.
Timrod was described by many of his contemporaries as a bright and animated conversationalist and somewhat of a dreamer, prone to be absent-minded and careless.
To further complicate Timrod's life, he contracted tuberculosis at age 30, a steadily debilitating disease that would claim his life nine years later as he struggled in grinding poverty in the aftermath of the war.

Timrod's first volume of poems (Boston, 1860) con-rained such fine work that it was hailed as an earnest of great excellence.
In 1862 a project was formed for having a volume of Timrod's poems brought out in London: but the pressure of great events interrupted this scheme, and it was never put into execution.

Henry Timrod (1829-1867), South Carolina’s cherished poet, spent the last years of his life in Columbia where he was assistant editor of the Carolinian, a daily newspaper.
A lawyer, tutor, poet and journalist, the Charleston-born Timrod served with the Confederate Army as a war correspondent, but resigned in 1862 because of ill health.
Timrod died in 1867 and was buried in Columbia’s Trinity Churchyard.

The first complete and thoroughly researched biography of Timrod, the volume came from Fairleigh Dickinson University Press this summer and may now be ordered from Associated University Presses, 2010 Eastpark Blvd., Cranbury, Ni 08512, for $38.50.
The amount of original research Cisco has done here, coupled with the excellent prose, makes this one of the better works of American literary history published in 2004.
