Rosemary Sutcliffe: Postscript to Henry Treece's "The Dream-time"
So Henry Treece has told this story in very short and simple words, put together in such a way that they can express things which are not simple at all.
But Henry Treece was lucky; he has written a very special book indeed for his last novel of all.

 Henry Treece
Treece began his career as a children’s writer in 1954 with Legions of the Eagle, again concerning the conflict between Romans and Celts.
In this and in Treece’s other early historical novels for children there is distinct evidence of ‘writing down’; he employs the conventional, and not always plausible, device of the boy hero as observer of the historical events.
Treece’s development as a historical novelist for children happened swiftly, in such books as Viking’s Dawn (1955), The Road to Miklagard (1957), and Viking’s Sunset (1960), a trilogy about the adventures of the Viking Harald Sigurdson from adolescence to middle age.

It writes 'the air was still' which is a contrast from war which they've just experienced, and 'no sound met our tired ears' not only shows us the men are tired but also how loud the war must have been and how it would have strained the ears and so they are going from extremes.
Treece then uses onomatopoeia to describe the surroundings such as 'drip' and 'swinging' and also pathetic fallacy to mirror the soldiers' feelings 'flened trees, broken pane, drip of rain'.
Treece then describes a 'dead bird in a rusting cage', which highlights the destruction war caused on innocent victims such as this bird

This anthology collects his critical writings plus several unpublished essays.

But although Treece was a leading figure in the Apocalyptic movement and had, together with J.R. Hendry, edited The New Apocalypse (1939) and The White Horseman (1941), Layton mentions neither the movement nor the anthologies, nor any other prominent younger poets of the period like Nicholas Moore and G.S.  Socialism Today - Red Dylan: The social vision of Dylan Thomas
Thomas made his opinion of Treece’s book even more clear when a friend asked him to inscribe a copy for him, and Thomas wrote in it ‘to hell with this stinking book’.
With Treece as a forerunner, literary critics like ML Rosenthal assigned Thomas a role as the poet of ‘introspective personalism’.
It was readily admitted by the critics that most of Thomas’s ideas and language were already there in his adolescent notebooks, but they assumed that he had jettisoned his Marxism and retained the poetic materials of this period.
