Henry V. In Henry V, Shakespeare paints a bold and brilliant picture of the English victories in France during Henry's reign.
Although Shakespeare's play is grounded in the history of the early fifteenth century, Shakespeare creates in this play a patriotic and more or less idealistic view of the period that has come to represent many modern ideas of Henry's reign.
On one level it is one of Shakespeare's most triumphant and patriotic plays; on another level it questions the nature of war and the value of unquestioning obedience.

By sheer genius, Branagh was able to present HENRY V in all of its nationalistic glory, just as Shakespeare wrote it, while at the same time adding an anti-war footnote that serves both as counterpoint and commentary on the Bard's message.
King Henry's threats outside the gates of Harfleur border on horrific, and his "Feast of St. Crispian" speech to his men before the battle of Agincourt is perhaps the most soul-stirring call to arms I have ever heard.
Kenneth Branagh gave "Henry V" the gritty, stirring interpretation it deserved. He also USED his immense acting talent, making King Henry into an all-too-human,conflicted man.His "Upon the king" soliliquy shows his loneliness, and the misery of war. It's no wonder his witty courtship with Princess Catherine at the end is a perfect, luminous counterpoint.

Henry V was a history play, yet it would have been anti-climactic for Shakespeare to have set down the King's actual words just before the battle of Agincourt (25 October 1415).
One can imagine the intensity of Henry as he contemplated the consequences of being captured by the French, the ruin of his country and its treasury to ransom him.
In a way it elevates Henry by showing him to be a leader of men and not merely a dictator concerned only with his own private woes.
