Henry is one of the larger parts in Shakespeare, and his acquisition of the French throne by "inheritance" provides the play's unifying action.
Beyond the simple cutting of lines, Henry V's representation of history has been radically reshaped in modern performance by the enactment of narrated events onstage, the reordering of scenes, the inclusion of actresses playing the female and sometimes male parts, and the omission of entire roles and episodes.
His Henry is simultaneously Christian warrior and cautious politician; his countrymen are a "band of brothers" who nevertheless quarrel about honor, responsibility, and nationhood, and who recognize the shakiness of the ground upon and for which they fight.

He was succeeded by his young son, Henry VI, during whose reign the English were expelled from all of France except Calais by French military successes, encouraged by Joan of Arc, under the new French king, Charles VII.
The battle was fought in the defile formed by the wood of Agincourt and that of Tramecourt, at the northern exit of which the army under d'Albret, constable of France, had placed itself so as to bar the way to Calais against the English forces which had been campaigning on the Somme.

One could see the transfer of setting from the stage to the actual history as a bit of a cop-out, but rather it should be seen as a unique storytelling device to transport the viewer to the world of Shakespeare and into the minds of those watching the play.
In contrast, there is a darkness and yet a sensitivity in Branagh's Henry that even exceed what one might think of as a straight performance of the text, whatever that may be.
Olivier did a much better job in slightly modernizing bits of the text and presenting the soliloquies in interesting ways, e.g., the King's meditation on "ceremony," which is played naturally as his own thoughts, something which can never be done in a live theater.

Don't expect the war-is-hell grit or emotionalism of Kenneth Branagh's 1989 version, or a purist-pleasing act of fidelity; Olivier dispensed with the play's darker implications (and much of its original text) to create a Henry V that would stoke the fires of World War II-era British patriotism.

In the early scenes, the movie combines the play itself with a very detailed look at how the play would have been staged in Shakespeare's own day.
It takes advantage of the slower parts in the early scenes to draw attention to the stage, the players, and the crowd, giving you a very good feel for what the theater was like then.
It is noticeable, though, that Olivier chose to omit several scenes or portions of scenes that have some of the commands showing Henry's harsher characteristics, so that the movie concentrates much more on the king's heroic side.
