Henry V (1989 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Henry V is a 1989 film directed by Kenneth Branagh, and based upon the Shakespeare play.
The visual and verbal styles of the film are much grittier than the Laurence Olivier film (see: Henry V (1944 movie)), particularly with respect to the Battle of Agincourt scenes, which are strongly reminiscent of the battle scenes in the films of Akira Kurosawa.
Henry V received near-universal critical acclaim for Branagh's Oscar-nominated performance and direction, for the accessibility of its Shakespearean language and particularly for its music by first-time composer Patrick Doyle, which was performed by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Simon Rattle.

Henry is an appointed symbol of majesty, and the action of the play is directed with the most elaborate care to show him doing everything that the age expected of the perfect king.
Moreover, to portray Henry as the dupe of two scheming prelates, or as a crafty politician skillfully concealing his aims with the aid of an unscrupulous archbishop, is not consistent with claiming at the same time that he is the ideal king; indeed it is destructive of the moral epic purpose of the play.
Henry was haunted I felt, not just by his father and their troubled relationship but also by the ghost of Richard II whom he invokes at the end of his famous "Upon the King" soliloquy.

Thus, it was almost with a clap of thunder that Henry V arrived, both on the American art-house circuit and in a much-ballyhooed screening on PBS, a television channel not given to showing first-run theatrical films.
Among all Shakespearean history plays, Henry V is a good choice for translating to film, in part because of its rather straightforward story, which keeps its focus almost entirely upon the young king and rarely drifts into awkward subplots.
Henry's military adventure had great appeal to Elizabethan audiences (it was first performed in 1599), who took pride in their nationality at the height of the English Renaissance.

The vehicle for this transition was Henry V, a project that proved to be equally important for Kenneth Branagh and the subsequent revival of the works of Shakespeare on the big screen in he 1990's.
While in retrospect, the Henry V score exposes some of the simplicities that will be evident in any composer's first major recording for film, it also exists as early evidence of Doyle's vast potential in the composing field.
At the outset of the film production of Henry V, Branagh asked the question, "how am I going to make it appeal to a wider audience?" The story is a political thriller, a study of leadership, a complex debate about war and the pity of war, and an uncompromising analysis of the English class system.

In directing the battle scenes, Branagh has borrowed from Welles (particularly his staging of the Battle of Shrewsbury in "Chimes at Midnight") and Kurosawa, but there is enough of the director's inspiration in them to claim a greatness of their own.
Branagh, with his "Henry," has accomplished a similar feat, and while his work doesn't supplant Olivier's, it is worthy of a place beside it.

Henry V: A Shakespeare Scenario was prepared in 1990 by Christopher Palmer, who assembled the principal movements of Walton's score - each telling a part of the tale - and then intercut them with speeches from those same events in Shakespeare's play.
The idea of ''Henry V - A Shakespeare Scenario'' (as Friday's premiere called it) came from Sir Neville Marriner and Christopher Plummer: it is a 50- minute piece for actor, chorus and orchestra, and the labour of love was assigned to Christopher Palmer.
Henry V in this version, despite a few token recurring themes and the conscription of a march Walton wrote for an unconnected television programme (it sounds like overscored Eric Coates), is still too bitty and dependent on the action as a framework.

Branagh's film replaces the patriotic zeal of Laurence Olivier's 1944 version of Henry V with a more sombre manner reflecting the brutality and futility of war, Branagh believing that Henry V was a play in need of rescue from the jingoism of its World War Two associations.
After the battle, Henry rides across the fields of the dead, carrying on his shoulders the body of a dead youth.
The film’s ending is something of an anti-climax as Henry turns from matters of state to those of the heart, and so his long-drawn-out courtship of French Princess Katherine (Emma Thompson) ensues.

Henry V is surely one of the Shakespeare Plays most amenable to screen adaptation.
Loaded with princes and nobles galore, decked out in the garments and weapons of chivalry, Henry V tells a tale of intrigues and betrayals, courtly romance, and heroic battles against outrageous odds.
In this sense, and in spite of the otherwise notorious difficulties of bringing off Shakespeare in the medium of feature film, Henry V might be one of the few of the Bard’s plays which can actually work better on screen than on stage, given the vast resources of filmic make-believe.
