Van de Velde studied painting in Antwerp and Paris.
Van de Velde was one of the first architects and furniture designers who worked in the abstract style with curved lines that would become characteristic for the Art Nouveau.
From 1926 to 1936, Van de Velde was professor at Ghent University, where he became the architect of the university library (the so-called Boekentoren or Book Tower).

Van de Velde had first achieved success as a painter, mostly with symbolist-tinged works in the neo-impressionist style of Seurat.
Van de Velde's shift in focus was strongly influenced by the social doctrines of the arts and crafts movement and his own commitment to a more egalitarian future: "the hope of a happy and egalitarian future lies behind these new decorative works," he wrote in 1894 in La Société Nouvelle.

In 1933 the 70 year Henry Van de Velde was commissioned to design the new university library and the institutes for Art history, veterinary science and pharmaceutical science.
For the final version of his concrete Book tower, a construction 64 metres high with four basements, twenty floors and an impressive belvedere, Van de Velde was able to rely on the know-how of his colleagues Gustave Magnel, a specialist in reinforced concrete, and Jean-Norbert Cloquet.

He was introduced to the work of Van Gogh, Seurat, Meunier, de Toulouse-Lautrec and others at an exhibition organised by Henry van de Velde at the Antwerp Academy around 1892.
At the end of November 1904 his young wife fell ill. Van Mieghem depicted her in an impressive series of drawings and pastels that rate alongside similar work by such artists as Rembrandt (the serie of Saskia) and Ferdinand Hodler (Valentine Godé).

Van de Velde, for one, was greatly inspired by William Morris.
