HENRY VANSITTART (1732-1770 or 1771), Anglo-Indian governor, was born in London on the 3rd of June 1732.
Vansittart's brother, Robert Vansittart (1728-1789), who was educated at Winchester and at Trinity College, Oxford, was regius professor of civil law at Oxford from 1757 until his death on the 31st of January 1789.
Another brother, George Vansittart (1745-1825), of Bisham Abbey, Berkshire, was the father of General George Henry Vansittart (1768-1824) and of Vice-Admiral Henry Vansittart (1777-1843).

In 1816, after the conclusion of peace, a large decrease in taxation was generally desired, and there was a loud cutcry when the chancellor proposed only to reduce, not to abolish, the property or income tax.
The abolition of this tax, however, was carried in parliament, and Vansittart was also obliged to remit the extra tax on malt, meeting a large deficiency principally by borrowing.
Vansittart became very unpopular in the country, and he resigned his office in December 1822.

Vansittart died in 1848, leaving an only child, Teresa, who, in 1841, married her cousin, Arthur Newcomen, Esq., R.H.A., and died in 1887, having survived her husband 39 years.
The eldest son, Arthur Henry Turner Newcomen, married Rachel, daughter of Sir Jervoise Clarke Jervoise, Bart., and died in 1844, leaving issue Kathleen, Muriel, and Henry Gleadowe Turner, a minor.

Vansittart was the grandson of Henry Vansittart, a director of the East India Company and Governor of Bengal (1760-1764, India), one of the nabobs who had amassed a fortune in the trade.
In 1812, age 28, Henry Vansittart married Theresa Glendowe-Newcomen, the widow of Sir Charles Turner (owner of Hambletonian and Beningbrough), thereby gaining Kirkleatham, Turner's Yorkshire estate.
The Vansittarts owned several generations of Barbelle's tail-female antecedants, beginning with her great-grandam, a mare by Pot-8-Os (1796), who produced Arquebusade (1808), Selima (1810), Slim (1815) and Slight (1816, who bred on, tail-female ancestress of Derby winners Fifinella and Pinza and many more winners), the three latter animals by Selim.

Henry Vansittart (June 3, 1732 - 1770 or 1771) was Governor of Bengal and a notorious rake.
Reprisals on the part of the subadar were followed by war and, annoyed at the failure of his pacific schemes, the governor resigned and returned to England in 1764.
His conduct was attacked before the board of directors in London, but events seemed to prove that he was in the right, and in 1769 he became a director of the company, having in the previous year obtained a seat in parliament.
