He was the eighth child of Lyman and Roxana Foote Beecher, and brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe.
The later years of his life were darkened by a scandal which Beechers personal, political and theological enemies used for a time effectively to shadow a reputation previously above reproach, he being charged by Theodore Tilton, whom he had befriended, with having had improper relations with his (Tiltons) wife.

His father, Lyman, was a leader of New England Congregationalism, and Henry was raised in a home full of intellectual discussions and staunch Calvinism.
After Henry became pastor of Brooklyn's Plymouth Church in 1847, it grew into one of the first large, middle-class suburban churches of America.
Henry believed theology should be adapted to the needs of contemporary culture and that Christianity should progress with the modern age.
