Satterlee received his B.A. from Columbia College in 1863 and studied for the ordained ministry at the General Theological Seminary.
In 1882 Satterlee became the rector of Calvary Church, New York, and served there until he was consecrated the first Bishop of Washington on Mar. 25, 1896.
Satterlee believed that a cathedral was the bishop's church, where the bishop could exercise pastoral ministry.

A procession left the platform consisting of the Bishop Henry Yates Satterlee, the Canons of the Cathedral, the architect bearing the Cathedral trowel, and Lemuel Towers, Jr., Master of Potomac Lodge No. 5, FAAM accompanied by three Brothers bearing the George Washington gavel.
In the great pit dug for the foundation, Bishop Satterlee laid the mortar beneath the stone and struck it three times with the Washington gavel.
Bishop Satterlee could not have known it, but his project started in 1907 on fifty-seven acres on Mount St. Albans became the longest-running construction site of our nation's capital.

The foundation stone was laid on Sept 29, 1907 in the presence of President Theodore Roosevelt.The first design was by English architects George Bodley and Henry Vaughan but in 1921 Philip Frohman was appointed and oversaw the building for the next 50 years.
The building continued through the wars and the massive central tower was completed in 1964.It rises to 70m to parapet and 81m to corner pinnacles.Known as Gloria in Excelsis it holds a carillon of 53 bells.
