Henry was born to Henry, 3rd Earl of Lancaster and Maud Chaworth.
Throughout his life, he held many honours, including: Earl of Derby, Earl of Lancaster, Earl of Leicester, Earl of Lincoln, and Duke of Lancaster; he was also a founding Knight of the Garter and Lord High Steward to Edward III.
This was a work written in the form of a prayer in which Henry confesses to his sins, explains various real and mythical medical remedies in terms of their theological symbolism, and exhorts the reader to greater morality.

They were descended from Henry de Ferrers, 1st Earl of Ferrières, Lord of Longueville, Normandy, and a Domesday Commissioner; he built Tutbury Castle and Duffield Castle and had large holdings in Derbyshire as well as 17 other counties.
He rebelled against King Henry III and was arrested and imprisoned first in the Tower of London, then in Windsor Castle, and his lands and earldom were forfeited, including Tutbury Castle which still belongs to the Duchy of Lancaster.

Henry's elder brother Thomas succeeded their father in 1296, but Henry was summoned to Parliament on February 6, 1298/99 by writ directed Henrico de Lancastre nepoti Regis, by which he is held to have become Lord Lancaster.
But Henry, who had not participated in his brother's rebellion, petitioned for his brother's lands and titles, and on March 29, 1324 he was invested as Earl of Leicester, and a few years later the earldom of Lancaster was also restored to him.
He was succeeded as Earl of Lancaster and Leicester by his eldest son, Henry of Grosmont, who subsequently became Duke of Lancaster.

In 1337 he was made earl of Derby; in 5345 he succeeded to his fathers earldoms of Lancaster and Leicester; in 1349 he was created earl of Lincoln, and in 1351 he was made duke of Lancaster.

In 1342, Henry accompanied Edward on his expedition into Brittany, having in his retinue five bannerets, fifty knights, with a proportional number of esquires and archers; and, during the Siege of Vannes, was constituted one of the commissioners to conclude a truce for three years.
In this document the accusation of Duke Henry is declared to be false, and he is invited to prove it, corps-à-corps, in the castle of Guisnes, at St. Omer, or wherever else the King of France should think fit to appoint.
The second and only surviving daughter and heir of the Duke was, therefore, Blanche (aged 14 at the death of her father) who became the consort of Prince John of Gaunt, Earl of Richmond (afterwards Duke of Lancaster).
