Rip Van Winkle is a short story by Washington Irving published in 1819, as well as the name of the story's fictional protagonist.
The story, written while Irving was staying with his sister Sarah and her husband Henry van Wart in Birmingham, England, is set in the years before and after the American Revolutionary War.
After various adventures (in one version of the tale, he encounters the spirits of Henry Hudson and his crew playing ninepins at the top of Kaaterskill Falls), he settles down under a shady tree and falls asleep.

 Washington Irving (April 3, 1783 - November 28, 1859) was an American author of the early 19th century.
Irving traveled on the Western frontier in the 1830s and was one of the few 19th Century figures to speak out against the mishandling of relations with the Native American tribes by Europeans.
Rip Van Winkle is a man who sleeps for a hundred years and wakes in a world he cannot recognize.

He is perhaps best known for his short stories, his most famous being The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip van Winkle (both appearing in The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon), but he was a prolific writer of essays, biographies, and other forms as well.
A lawyer, he was a member of the American diplomatic staff in Britain and in Spain.

Van Wart, the youngest at 20, kept watch while Williams (26) and Paulding (22) played cards.
Their names are John Paulding, David Williams, and Isaac Van Wart.
Van Wart lived on a farm east of Tarrytown and died in 1828, being buried in the churchyard of the Dutch Reformed Church at Elmsford where he was a member and chorister.

At the time Rip Van Winkle was written, in 1818, there lived in one such house, the one I have referred to, an American couple by the name of Van Wart.
The Van Warts first came to England when he was entrusted with opening a branch of Irving and Smith in Liverpool.
Whilst Irving was still in Birmingham the Van Warts were invited to visit James Watt junior, who at that time had recently leased Aston Hall from Abraham Bracebridge, the last surviving member of the Holte family, who had built the hall in 1634.

The birth of a son, John Henry Gesner, was recorded on 24 May 1724 at Tappan, NY.* In the next year, Johan Gesner purchased land in the Tappan area.
Just prior to the Revolutionary War John Henry Gesner was regarded as a citizen of Orangetown, NY—a result of the border dispute—but by the time war broke out, the new boundary ran through their farm with the house lying within New Jersey.
ohn Henry Gesner was laid to rest in 1811 beside Famitcha in the Gesner-Conklin Burying Ground just north of the old Gesner house which apparently was in a state of severe deterioration.

Henry Van Wart had the reputation of being a thoroughly nice man. He became a naturalised British Citizen and a respected pillar of the Birmingham establishment, a councillor, alderman and magistrate, and lived on in his adopted city until his death in 1873 at the age of 90.
But an entry in Wrightson's Directory gives the address of one John Lawrence, silversmith, as 'Frederick Street Harper's Hill', which raises the interesting possibility that James Watt might have been a neighbour of the Van Warts.

John Henry Gesner died in the same year and Mary Quidor moved into the John Henry Gesner Hometead owned by her in-laws, 2nd Jacob Conklin and Elizabeth Gesner-Conklin.
Between 1812 and 1832 Mary "Polly" Quidor lived in the Old John Henry Gesner Homestead [shown on Robert Erskine's Revolutionary War Map, Number 10, 1788-80] although 2nd Jacob (Polly's father-in-law) had left the house and property to her youngest son, Nicholas.
In February 1832, she moved in with her daughter, Phebe Van Wickel, ostensibly to care for her ailing father, Peter Quidor, who had been taken in by her daughter.
