Henryk IV był jedynym synem księcia wrocławskiego Henryka III Białego i Judyty Mazowieckiej.
Henryk IV miał jednak inne plany i uwięził zgromadzonych książąt Henryka III Głogowczyka, Henryka V Brzuchatego i Przemysła II Wielkopolskiego próbując wymusić na nich ustępstwa polityczne.
Henryk zorganizował wielki zjazd książąt w biskupiej Nysie, którego główną atrakcją był turniej rycerski podczas którego: "cały zapas zboża, które biskup posiadał na przedmieściach, zużytkowano na paszę dla koni".

The first significant attempts were made by Duke Henryk IV Probus of Silesia, but he died in 1290 before realizing his goal.
According to his will Greater Poland was supposed to be inherited by Duke Henryk Głogowski (of Głogów/Glogau), who also aspired to unite Poland and even claimed the title Duke of Poland.
Under Emperor Charles IV, Silesia and especially Breslau gained greatly in importance, as many great buildings and large Gothic churches were built.

In 1289 Lokietek defeated in the battle of Siewierz the army of Henryk IV Probus, Prince of Cracow 1288-1290 and Duke of Wroclaw 1270-1290.
They had six children: Wladyslaw, Stefan and Jadwiga died in childhood; Kazimierz (later Casimir III the Great, King of Poland), Kunegunda (married to Rudolf von Sachsen) and Elzbieta (married to Karol Robert, King of Hungary, mother of Ludwik Wegierski, King of Poland, father of Jadwiga I Queen of Poland).
On June 23, 1290 died Henryk IV Probus leaving the Cracovian throne to Przemysl II Wielkopolski, Duke of Wielkopolska (Greater Poland), King of Poland 1295-1296.

First significant attempts were performed by Silesian duke Henryk IV Probus, however he died in 1290 before obtaining his goal.
During talks with prince Władysław (future king of Poland, Władysław IV Waza), on his voyage to Silesia in mid of 1619, Emperor promised to agree for temporary occupation of part of Silesia by Polish forces, which Wazas hoped would later allow to incorporate those areas into Poland.
Some of the Silesian dukes (especially remaining ones of the Piast dynasty) and bishop of Wrocław, archduke Karol Habsburg wanted to move under Commonwealth protection as well (hoping to avoid participation in the Thirty Years' War which was ravaging lands of the Holy Roman Empire).

1396 - The duke Henryk von Lüben issued a document in which Kluczbork was mentioned as town with fortification (probably there was large castle - first written mention about it derived from 1581; at the end of the 17th century the castle fell into disrepair.
In 1720 the castle was rebuilt into imperial administration's headquarters.
