Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin by Henryk Szeryng at jsbach.org
Henryk Szeryng's recording of the Bach Solo Sonatas and Partitas for Violin is perhaps not the greatest of the recordings of these pieces, but they are certainly one of the best.
Not only is Szeryng a wonderful violinist in his own right, but he is an artist in a class of artists that no longer exists today; at least the majority of what people call artists today are not artists but rather performers, and sometimes sadly nothing more than entertainers.
Szeryng performs the cycle, including the thorniest of chordal passages, with consistently gorgeous tone, tasteful and intelligent bow and finger use, intonation that is stunning in its precision and, above all, a musicality that results in the most profound interpretation of these pieces.

Szeryng's recordings of the Bach Sonatas and Partitas are still a reference taken seriously today, even if styles have changed in the meantime.
Szeryng succeeded in his modest and unpresuming way.

Szeryng is currently, for reasons I do not comprehend, less well known than many other violinists - but he was demonstrably superior to almost all of them.
Szeryng's Bach is in a class by itself.
Szeryng's virtuosity lies in his ability to play Bach faithfully and *beautifully, leaving the listener to appreciate and use the imagination.

Szeryng and Katz draw out phrases, filling every segment of every second with beauty and meaning.
Their phrases are astoundingly long and extraordinarily interesting...It is interesting to compare it with Szeryng wonderful 1960 recording of the Brahms Sonata with Rubinstein (RCA).
Though I love the RCA recording, I find that Szeryng's recording with Katz goes even deeper.

Violin Concerto in E & Chaconne from the Partita II by Henryk Szeryng at jsbach.org
These are live recordings from the concerts Henryk Szeryng gave in Romania in 1961 with the occasion of the George Enescu festival.
Here Szeryng is even more brilliant than in his studio recordings of the works - 1965 and 1968 for the Partita, 1976 for the violin concerto with Neville Marriner, all of which are reviewed on the J.S. Bach homepage as well; I have not heard his earlier recordings of the violin concertos.
I wish that Szeryng performed both the violin concertos and the six sonatas and partitas on this occasion as well.

To some, Szeryng at first might appear somewhat detached and cool, especially when his reading is set alongside more overtly emotional performances by Kyung-Wha Chung, Frank Peter Zimmerman, and in particular, Anne Sophie Mutter.
In other words, less is definitely more here, and with Kubelik's watchful and restrained orchestral support a model of distinction throughout, Szeryng is able to address the work with a degree of flexibility, rapture, and zen-like restraint that's seldom been equalled.

Classical Net Review - Schumann - Piano & Violin Concertos
Henryk Szeryng was the soloist on that memorable occasion, and in an intermission interview he spoke passionately about the significance and greatness of this work.
He is now convinced that the composer intended a much slower tempo for the finale than what we are accustomed to from the recordings of Kulenkampff, Lautenbacher, or Szeryng.
His tone is richer and more full-bodied than Szeryng's, though that is probably the resultof Mercury's "Living Presence" recording rather than any deficiency on the part of the Polish violinist.

Still, hearing his electric interplay with Szeryng, you can't help but mourn all of the recordings we might have had of Graffman's Beethoven.
Szeryng's playing sparkles, particularly in the Allegro movement from the Sonata in E-flat, Opus 12 No. 2, and in his brilliant traversal of the finale to the "Kreutzer" Sonata, Op.
