At the urging of pianist and composer Anton Rubinstein, Wieniawski moved to St. Petersburg, where between 1860 and 1872 he taught at the newly formed conservatory, led the string quartet and orchestra of the Russian Music Society, and served as solo violinist to the czar.
Wieniawski also exhibits his Classical heritage: instead of starting right off with the soloist, as several Romantic composers had been doing since Mendelssohn, he proceeds with a substantial orchestral exposition.
Wieniawski then provides the solo violin with a quietly dramatic entrance and a fully decorated statement of the first theme.
