Hen and chicks - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hen and chicks is a common name for a group of small succulents belonging to the Crassulaceae that grow close to the ground with leaves formed around each other in a rosette, propagating by offsets.
The 'hen' is the main plant, and the 'chicks' are the offspring, which start as tiny buds on the main plant and soon sprout their own roots, taking up residence close to the mother plant.
Hen and chicks are popular in gardens for their varied and interesting appearance and hardiness.

Chicks that were enclosed and fed for 8 weeks (wet season) had higher overall weight gains (222 ± 21.2g) followed by those in the dry season and those enclosed for 6 weeks (both seasons) (170 ± 21.25g, 165 ± 19.20g and 166 ± 17.20g).
Chicks tend to be the weakest among chicken flocks and, as such, cannot compete with adult birds for feed available from the scavenging feed resource base (Roberts 1999).
In that study the chicks were separated from their mother hens at an age of four weeks while in the current study, the chicks were separated from their mother hen at the age of two weeks.

 SETTING HENS
When on the nest she is the hen that will "growl" at you and the other hens when they come near the nest.
For a hen from a flock, she should be given a cage or large box for a few weeks or until the chicks start to feather.
Althrough the laying hens in a flock rarely pester the chicks when interduced to the flock, this is not the case with broodies.

The usual incubation period for hens' eggs is 21 days, which is when the hen would expect to find the babies under her.
I had a hen who had gone broody one spring, and had sat on some eggs for about 4 weeks and none of them hatched (they should have hatched after 19 to 22 days).
Next morning she went to the chicken wire fence to see that the chicks were all right, and she stayed quite a while, and then left and joined the rest of the flock.

Setting and hatching are quite different modes for hens, suddenly they become protective when the chicks hatch, and their good sister becomes a threat.
One hen may be happy to hover the chicks, the other may be calling them out and scratching and showng them feed.
And the chicks are caught in the middle--or out in the "cold".You also will be lucky if the eggs hatch evenly, as even dear setting hens will have been sneaking the eggs back and forth, wanting them all for themselves and sometimes some of the eggs are not evenly incubating.

Hans Christian Andersen - The Farm-Yard Cock and the Weather-Cock
The hens, chicks, and even the cock sought shelter; the wind tore down the planks between the two yards with a crash; the tiles came tumbling down, but the weather-cock sat firm.
The hens and the chickens came, for where one runs the others run too; they clucked, and chirped, and looked at the cock, and were proud that he was of their kind.
With that the yard cock flapped his wings, made his comb swell up, and crowed again; and they all shuddered, the hens and the little chicks- but they were very proud that one of their number was such a champion of all cocks.
