The Hs 293V-4 and C-1 were guided by radio, like the Fritz-X, but after the Germans found that the Allies were capable of interferring with the control signals to the missile wire guidance was adopted.
Since the RLM specification called for Henschel to direct its attention to developing remotely controlled air-to-surface missiles, the team began to work with the Schwarz design which was soon found to be inadequate, requiring extensive redesign and modification.
The size and weight of the Henschel designs in 1940 were necessarily limited by the smallness of the Luftwaffe's operational bombers which were to carry the missiles.

Schmetterling - Encyclopedia Glossary Meaning Explanation Schmetterling   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
The Henschel Hs 117 Schmetterling (German for Butterfly) was a German surface-to-air missile project developed during World War II.
In 1941, Professor Herbert Wagner (who was previously responsible for the Henschel Hs 293 anti-ship missile) invented the Schmetterling missile and submitted it to the RLM, who rejected the design because there was, as yet, no need for more anti-aircraft weaponry
However, by 1943 the large-scale bombing of Germany caused the RLM to change its mind, and the Henschel company was given a contract to develop and manufacture it.

 Henschel Hs.117 Schmetterling
With a wealth of experience from the Hs.293 Glide Bomb, Wagner's team had decided on a line-of-sight controlled missile, small enough to be manhandled by a ground team, but carrying a warhead capable of rendering a B.17 unserviceable from a distance of an approximately 8 yard proximity burst.
Initially Henschel promised a speed of 75% of the speed of sound to the RLM, with the intention of increasing this speed during development.
Depending on the ability of the missile's aimer, Henschel were predicting an initially oscillating flight path whilst the target was acquired, with a final straight flight to target.

The Hs 117 was fueled by a combination of nitric acid and Tonka, a mixed hydrocarbon fuel, and was boosted by two solid-fuel Schmidding rocket units, one each above and below on the missile.
The Hs 117 normally used the BMW 109-558 rocket motor of 375 kg (825 lbs.) thrust for 33 seconds which fell to 60 kg (132 lbs.) over the last 24 seconds.

Henschel Hs.117 Schmetterling   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Schmetterling was a surface-to-air, anti-aircraft missile designed to be small enough to be deployed by small teams of men without the need for heavy lifting equipment, and with a warhead with sufficient power to severely damage a B-17 enemy bomber with a proximity burst.
Designed by Professor H. Wagner, and developed by F. Henschel under his guidance, Schmetterling was on the drawing board comparatively early in the war.
Wagner's initial proposals were for a winged, powered, air launched, "stand-off" anti-ship missile, in competition with Dr. Kramer's free-falling Fritz X. Out of the series of weapons which Henschel derived via the Hs.293, the 1941 Hs.297 project was conceived as an anti-aircraft rocket.
