The Henschel Hs 129, often referred to by it's nickname, the Panzerknacker, (tank cracker), was a World War II ground attack aircraft fielded by the Luftwaffe.
But the Condor Legion[?] proved the opposite in Spain with attack planes like the Henschel Hs 123[?] and cannon-armed versions of the Heinkel He 112.
The Hs 129 was designed around a single large "bathtub" of steel sheeting that made up the entire nose area of the plane, completely enclosing the pilot up to head level.

The outcome of a 1938 exercise led the Führungsstab of the Luftwaffe to believe that an aircraft of this configuration could play no roll in a future war and withdrew the aircraft from the frontline service, these being than allocated to dive-bomber trainings units.
Henschel and Ago were instructed to scrap all jigs, models and tools for production.

The Henschel Hs 123, developed in 1935, entered service in 1936 as the first stage in the Luftwaffe’s effort to create a modern dive bomber force.
The Hs 123 played the close-support role successfully from the Spanish Civil War, through the invasion of Poland and the Balkans and well on into the disaster that was the invasion of Russia.
So valued was the Hs 123 in its role on the Eastern front, that it was even suggested as late as January of 1943, that production of the Hs 123 be reinstated.

The Henschel Hs 123 first flew in 1935, and was designed to meet a Luftwaffe requirement for a dive-bomber.
Technically, the Hs 123 was as much a Stuka as the Ju 87, as the name was simply an abbreviation for the German term for dive-bomber.
The Hs 123 was one of the very few dedicated single-seat ground attack aircraft of the period, and the most successful.

Designed to an official requirement for a dive-bomber, issued in 1933, the Henschel Hs 123 single-bay biplane was of all-metal construction, with fabric covering used only for the rear portions of the wings and the control surfaces.
The Hs 123A first entered service with 1./StG 162 in the autumn of 1936, although its career as a front-line dive-bomber was short-lived because the Junkers Ju 87A Stuka began to replace it in 1937.
Five Hs 123As were supplied to the Legion Condor in Spain in December 1936; the type also saw operational service as a close support aircraft in Poland during the closing months of 1939 and in the campaigns in France and Belgium during the spring of 1940.

 The Junkers Ju-87 Stuka
Although it was nearing obsolescence even when World War II began, it proved highly successful in the initial German "Blitzkrieg" campaigns, and even today endures as a symbol of Nazi terror, despite the fact that by the middle of the war it was thoroughly out-of-date.
Henschel and Fiesler both built prototypes for the conservative requirement, which specified a single-seat biplane dive-bomber.
The broadly similar Fiesler "Fi-98" dive bomber prototype took to the air at about the same time, but proved clearly inferior to the Henschel aircraft and was quickly eliminated from the competition, with work on a second prototype cancelled.
