 All About Birds
Henslow's Sparrow was named by John James Audubon in honor of John Stevens Henslow, a botanist, minister, good friend of Audubon, and teacher of Charles Darwin.
Originally the distribution of Henslow's Sparrow was concentrated in two areas: the central prairies of the United States and the coastal marshes of the Atlantic Coast.
Henslow's Sparrow does not have federally protected status in the United States, but is listed as Endangered in seven states, as well as Canada.

Birds, Familiar: Grasshopper Sparrow, Life Histories of North American Birds, A.C. Bent
The young Henslow's sparrow with relatively unstreaked breast may be confused with the adult grasshopper sparrow, but the distinctly chestnut wings of Henslow's sparrow separates this species at all ages from the grasshopper sparrow.
Among the predators of the grasshopper sparrow are the skunk (Mephitis mephitis), weasels, spermophiles (Citellus spp.), foxes, and cats.
The grasshopper sparrow is a grassland bird, most plentiful in managed grasslands and absent from fields with 35 percent of the area in shrubs.

 Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge
This recommendation is based partly on the deduction that ground nesting birds of concern, including upland sandpiper, short-eared owl, vesper sparrow, Savannah sparrow, grasshopper sparrow, Henslow's sparrow, bobolink, and eastern meadowlark, present distraction displays in response to predators near their nests.
Grassland dependant birds that nest at the Refuge include northern harrier, upland sandpiper, grasshopper sparrow, Henslow's sparrow, savannah sparrow, vesper sparrow, eastern meadowlark, and bobolink.
Contrastingly, Roberts also states that vesper sparrows more commonly fly "directly away, low over the ground." Berger states that female vesper sparrows will respond to humans near nests with young by running along the ground conspicuously, with tail spread and wings raised.

When Wayne Petersen and Simon Perkins of the Massachusetts Audubon Society (MAS) and others arrived the next morning, a second Henslow's Sparrow appeared, delighting us with the possibility of breeding in a field much smaller than the seventy-five-plus acres thought to be optimal for Henslow's Sparrows.
On July 10 I saw in Forbush's Birds of Massachusetts that the Henslow's Sparrow did have a song that resembled the more complex song I was hearing.
The Henslow's Sparrow (Passerherbulus henslowii) in Massachusetts is now a rare or very rare, erratic, and local breeder near the edge of its historic range.
