The film is a movie-in-a-movie, as we see Kermit the Frog and the rest of the Muppets gathering for the first screening of The Muppet Movie.
The film was scored by Paul Williams and Kenny Ascher, and their song The Rainbow Connection received an Academy Award nomination and became the informal theme song of Henson Pictures.

James Maury Henson was born September 24, 1936, in Greenville, Mississippi, the second son of Paul Ransom and Elizabeth Marcella Henson.
Henson’s success on Sesame Street paved the way for his next television production, The Muppet Show, a weekly syndicated variety show hosted by Kermit the Frog with an expanded cast of both new and familiar muppets and guest starring live actors and celebrities.
Henson’s film and television productions are too numerous to recount here, as are his varied roles in them: he often served as writer, director, producer, and “performer” (as puppeteer and voice) in his productions, and occasionally in other roles as well (such as choreography for The Muppets Take Manhattan).

Henson was soon asked to help create a new television program directed at pre-shcool children.
By 1981, Henson decided to concentrate more on his other ideas/interests and stopped taping new episodes for "The Muppet Show." He began filming The Dark Crystal which encompassed all of Henson's techniques plus new mechanics he was starting to become involved with.
Henson also conducted a much more dramatic use of puppetry and special effects shown in the television episodes of "The Storyteller" which ran from 1987 to 1989.

Henson Associates said Monday that Kermit will be among the characters appearing in The Muppets Celebrate Jim Henson on CBS Nov. 21.
Since the May death of Jim Henson, who created Kermit and supplied his voice, it's been unclear whether the frog would be heard from again, outside of reruns and videos.

But Henson, Oz, et al did it first and pushed the envelope about as far as it would go at the time.
