New CDC HIV Prevention Funding Emphasizes Effectiveness, Focuses on Those Already Infected
The aims of this retrospective study were to determine the prevalence of and the risk factors for hepatic steatosis and to assess the association of being overweight/obese and steatosis with activity and progression of CHC in U.S.patients.
Steatosis was graded on a scale of 0–3: 0=absence of steatosis; grade 1=30% of hepatocytes affected; grade 2=30 to about 70% of hepatocytes affected; grade 3=70% of hepatocytes affected.
Grade II/III steatosis was not associated with age at the exposure, elevated ALT and ferritin at entry, hepatic iron staining, hypoalbuminemia, thrombocytopenia, and splenomegaly.

Hepatic Steatosis Is a Significant Risk Factor for Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Patients with Chronic HCV   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Hepatic steatosis (fatty liver) is one of the histopathologic features of chronic hepatitis C. It was reported recently that the expression of hepatitis C virus (HCV) core protein in transgenic mice induced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in association with steatosis.
The objective of this study was to determine the relation between hepatic steatosis and hepatocarcinogenesis (origin of liver cancer) in patients with chronic HCV infection.

Prevalence of hepatic steatosis (fatty liver) in an urban population in the United States: Impact of ethnicity
The higher prevalence of hepatic steatosis in Hispanics was positively correlated with obesity and insulin resistance, whereas the lower prevalence of hepatic steatosis in fls was not attributable to these factors, or to ethnic differences in ethanol intake.
Finally, although hepatic steatosis was associated with a higher prevalence of elevated serum ALT levels, the vast majority of subjects with excess hepatic triglyceride had normal serum aminotransferase levels.
Hepatic steatosis develops for a variety of reasons but is most commonly associated with obesity, insulin resistance, and hyperlipidemia, all of which are components of the metabolic syndrome.

Hepatitis C Outreach Project   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Identification of hepatic macrosteatosis is an important component of the evaluation of live liver donors for 2 reasons: (1) hepatic steatosis is common in the general population, paralleling obesity, and (2) depending on the degree, hepatic steatosis is a risk factor for primary nonfunction of the liver allograft.
Liver biopsy is the gold standard for quantifying steatosis and is relatively safe, but the risks (albeit small) of significant bleeding and death have prompted clinicians to establish a valid and reliable noninvasive method.
However, when imaging studies reported no fat, steatosis was observed on biopsy in 3 of 10 patients who had MRI (all grade 1a) and 4 of 17 who had CT (3 with grade 1a and 1 with grade 2).

Hepatic steatosis is increasingly being recognized as a condition that may progress to end-stage liver disease.
Hepatic steatosis can occur with the use of alcohol (alcohol-related fatty liver) or in the absence of alcohol (nonalcoholic fatty liver disease).2 Fatty liver associated with the use of alcohol may occur with as little as 10 oz of alcohol ingested per week.

Hepatic steatosis is also frequently found in obesity and is associated both with impaired glucose tolerance and/or hyperinsulinemia and with hypertriglyceridemia with or without high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels.
However, the complex relationships between visceral fat accumulation, hepatic steatosis, and metabolic abnormalities largely remain to be elucidated.
In the present study, the relationship between visceral obesity and hepatic steatosis was investigated in a small group of morbidly obese women treated by means of adjustable silicone gastric banding with the LAP-BAND.

The impact of high BMI on hepatic fibrosis, steatosis and inflammatory activity in patients with chronic HCV is still under investigation.
The aim of this study is to assess the potential association between body mass index and stage of hepatic fibrosis in HCV patients.
High BMI was also associated with hepatic steatosis (P=0.03), although there was no statistically significant association between steatosis and fibrosis stages suggesting that the association between BMI and fibrosis is independent of that of BMI and steatosis.

Nearly one-third of the sample was found to have hepatic steatosis (defined as HTGC greater than 95th percentile of healthy persons, or 5.5 percent liver fat content) and "striking differences in the prevalence of hepatic steatosis were present among the three major ethnic groups," the authors report.
The prevalence of hepatic steatosis was significantly higher in Hispanics than in whites, and significantly lower in fls than in whites.
Furthermore, while the prevalence of hepatic steatosis was similar between the sexes in fls and Hispanics, in whites, prevalence in men was twice as high than that in women.

In a study of acute viral hepatitis, silymarin administered to twenty nine patients showed a definite therapeutic influence on the characteristic increased serum levels of bilirubin and liver enzymes compared with a placebo group.
In a study in chronic viral hepatitis, silymarin was shown to result in dramatic improvement.
Used at a high dose (420 milligrams of silymarin) for periods of 3 to 12 months, silymarin resulted in a reversal of liver cell damage (as noted by biopsy), an increase in protein level in the blood, and a lowering of liver enzymes.

MVI Newsflash: Hepatic Cholestasis In Patients Receiving Chronic PN
There is also substantial evidence that hepatic complications accompany many disease states (eg, major enterectomy in Crohn’s disease), so it is unclear if the administration of PN is a cause or associated cause of hepatic abnormalities.
Hepatic steatosis is common in adults receiving PN, even when the PN is administered for relatively short time periods.
In most cases, the hepatic steatosis is self-limiting, whether the PN is discontinued or not.

The aim of this experiment was to study the changes in free amino acid (AA) concentration in blood plasma of dairy cows developing hepatic steatosis after parturition and to establish the diagnosis by means of Fischer´s index.
They were divided into two groups (S - cows with steatosis, N - cows with no increased deposition of fat in the liver) based on morphological examination of hepatic tissue on day 4 after feed restriction.
The concentration of free amino acids in blood is not a sensitive indicator of liver function impairment, therefore cannot be used in the diagnosis of liver steatosis.

Neonatal hepatic steatosis (OMIM 228100) is a fatal condition of unknown etiology characterized by a pale and yellow liver and early postnatal mortality.
Thus, a deficiency in adenosine metabolism is identified as a powerful contributor to the development of neonatal hepatic steatosis, providing a model for the rapid development of postnatally lethal fatty liver.

Methods: Correlation was made between the pathologists’ grading of the hepatic steatosis and the measured hepatic TG content in liver tissue samples from 39 patients without hepatitis C or B or significant alcohol consumption (age: 46 + 15 yrs, males: 49%).
TG content in the liver homogenate was determined by measuring the absorbance by UV spectrophotometer (520 nm).The TG content was normalized with the protein content of the liver sample, which was measured by the absorbance by UV spectrophotometer (595 nm).
Histological grading of the macrovesicular steatosis was done in a blinded fashion by three experienced hepatopathologists.Kappa statistics was used to assess the inter-observer agreement for histological grading of the steatosis and ANOVA was used to test the association between pathologists’ histological grading and the TG content.
