Hepatoblastoma and hepatocarcinoma in infancy and childhood: report of 47 cases
Half of the patients who underwent resection, including the 3 who received therapeutic radiation, died; the remaining 9 patients were alive at the time of writing, 6 surviving 4-13 yr without evidence of recurrence or metastasis.
All of the patients with hepatocarcinoma died, regardless of the form of therapy administered; the survival from onset to death varied from 2 wk to 2 yr.
Seven of these hepatocarcinoma patients were given only supportive treatment, one was treated with multiple doses of colloidal 198Au, one was treated with cyclophosphamide, and three were treated by surgical resection.

Further, chronic hepatic disorders including hepatic cirrhosis, chronic hepatitis, etc. have a relatively high tendency to develop hepatocarcinoma, regardless of hepatitis B and C. In addition, it has been known that the frequency to develop hepatocarcinoma from chronic hepatitis and hepatic cirrhosis may be 6-8 times increased by alcohol or smoking.

The mutant may be selected by host immune pressure, which may explain the higher percentage of mutants found in late infected children (65%) as compared to children contaminated at birth (37.5%), who have a higher immune tolerance towards the virus 18.
However, cirrhosis and hepatocarcinoma are a reality for young adults, and vaccination has been shown to reduce this risk.
Treatment with interferon or lamivudine yield an insufficient success rate, and very long term studies and new therapeutic tools are needed to convince paediatricians that children in the early stage of the disease may benefit from treatment.

BioMed Central | Full text | δ-Aminolevulinic acid cytotoxic effects on human hepatocarcinoma cell lines
We have determined the impact of ALA on HEP G2 and HEP 3B hepatocarcinoma cell lines survival as measured by the MTT assay.
Human hepatocarcinoma cells were treated with various concentrations (0.5–5 mM) of ALA and the viability of cells was determined (Figure 1).
In summary, ALA has a markedly cytotoxic effect on hepatocarcinoma cell lines at physiological levels, which could be attributed to an enhancement of apoptosis, independent of p53 but due to inhibition of cell cycle regulators CDKs.

METHODS: Human hepatocarcinoma cell line (SMMC-7721) was treated in vitro with 0.5mg/L tanshinone for 4 days, and variation in cell differentiation wasdetected.RESULTS The morphology of cancer cells was tended toward well differentiation and cell growth was markedly inhibited.
We used transretinoic acids as positive control to study the reversing effect of tanshinone on malignant phenotypes of human hepatocarcinoma cells in cellular morphology, cellular properties of growth and proliferation, cell cycle and expression of oncogene.
Human hepatocarcinoma cells were treated with non-cytotoxic dose of tanshinone.

The objective of the present study was to investigate the multicellular resistance of human hepatocarcinoma cells BEL-7402 to pharmorubicin.
The cells cultured as multicellular aggregates were resistant to pharmorubicin with IC50 4.5-fold and 7.7-fold that of monolayer culture as determined by flow cytometry and MTT assay, respectively.
This three-dimensional culture model may be used to investigate the mechanisms of multicellular drug resistance of hepatocarcinoma and to screen new anticancer drugs.

This study was undertaken to assess therapeutic efficacy of transplantation of bone marrow mononuclear cells transferred with the mdr1 gene and over-dose chemotherapy with doxorubicin for VX2 hepatocarcinoma of rabbits.
VX2 hepatocarcinoma cells could be killed rapidly and relapse and metastasis of the tumor could be prevented by over-dose chemotherapy.
Hence over-dose chemotherapy is advisable to kill hepatocarcinoma cells, prevent relapse and metastasis, and increase the survival time and healing rate of rabbits.

Hepatocarcinoma generally has a poor prognosis, and the optimal treatment of locally advanced hepatocarcinoma remains controversial.
Transcatheter arterial chemoembolisation of hepatocarcinoma is widely used but has not been fully investigated.
Roberto Mazzanti, MD, with the School of Medicine at the University of Florence, Italy, and colleagues wanted to determine whether intra-arterial chemotherapy with 5-flurouracil and folinic acid in locally advanced hepatocarcinoma is a viable alternative to existing therapies.

The morphological characteristics of the non-treated cancer cells included variation in the size and shape of cancer cells; enlarged and hyperchromatic nuclei with clumped hetero-chromatin; enlarged nucleoli; decreased cytoplasm, increased ratio of nucleus and cytoplasm.
Given the fact that most people do not believe in the existence of Qi or effectiveness of Qigong in healing, and tend to consider the effects of Qigong mostly psychological, it is very important to minimize the potential psychological hint or placebo effect in a Qigong study.

The treatment is complex and requires the close collaboration of the Departments of Nuclear Medicine, Conventional and Interventionist Radiology, Hepatology and Oncology.
In the primary tumours of the liver, also called hepatocarcinomas, the results show that the treatment is very efficacious in preventing treated lesions from growing: it achieves control - not eradication – of the disease in over 90% of the cases, at times over quite prolonged periods.
The technique incorporated at the University Hospital is particularly suitable for treating primary tumours of the liver (hepatocarcinomas) as well as secondary ones, above all, metastasis of cancer of the colon and endocrine tumours.

Among patients who do not die from their symptoms in early childhood, a chronic form of the disorder eventually leads to liver failure or hepatocarcinoma and death, usually before 10 years of age.
This strategy of using NTBC plus dietary restriction of phenylalanine and tyrosine has allowed for greater than 90% survival, normal somatic growth, correction of renal tubular acidosis, improvement of liver function, and prevention of cirrhosis.
With the use of NTBC, however, liver failure is prevented and hepatocarcinoma may be prevented as well.

 Antisense therapy for hepatocarcinoma
AIM: Human Hepatocarcinoma (HCC) is the most frequent cancer of the liver.
RESULTS: After selection with hygromycin whose resistant gene is harbored by the vector, we have isolated two cell lines which became poorly tumorigenic and are able to inhibit in vivo the growth of parental tumoral cells and/or to induce the regression of established tumors in the animal.
CONCLUSIONS: The transfected hepatocarcinoma cells which do not produce IGF I induce in vivo a tumor immunity mediated by CD8 T. Furthermore, the expression of MHC class I was increased at last four fold as compared to parental cells.
