Although occasionally practiced by specialised hepatologists, it is most often considered the terrain of gastroenterology.

The Division of Hepatology is committed to providing exceptional clinical care, as well as promoting state-of-the-art research in both clinical and basic investigations in the pathogenesis and treatment of liver diseases.
Although the Division of Hepatology currently is one of the largest independent Divisions of Hepatology in the country, current plans include the rapid expansion and recruitment of additional clinical and research investigators.
There are also close collaborative efforts with the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition at Children's Memorial Hospital where faculty in the Department of Pediatrics are actively involved in collaborative basic and clinical research studies, as well as clinical care of patients with liver disease.

It includes, but is not limited to, the study of acute and chronic hepatitis, viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, genetic and metabolic liver diseases and their complications, liver cancer, liver transplantation, drug metabolism (which depends largely upon the liver), and immunology as it pertains to the liver.
Historically, hepatology grew out of gastroenterology and so became a subfield of it, although today it appears to be emerging as a freestanding medical specialty.
History: Dr. Sheila Sherlock (1918-2001), was a pioneer in the science of liver disease, is considered the "mother of hepatology." Her book, "Diseases of the Liver and Biliary System" which she first published in 1955, was the first standard textbook on clinical liver disease.

The 3-year fellowship training program in gastroenterology at the University of Tennessee, Memphis is comprised of three basic components: a 20 month core curriculum, 3-4 months of research, and 12 months of elective.
The core curriculum is uniform for all fellows and includes 18 months of hospital-based consultative gastroenterology and hepatology, 2 months of focused training (motility, nutrition, radiology), two longitudinal general GI clinics (for the entire 3 years), and a series of conferences designed to augment the clinical training goals of the curriculum.
