Chicago Botanic Garden - 26 Gardens - Plant Profile: Seven-son-flower   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Heptacodium miconioides, or seven-son-flower, is a perfect example of a plant that remained unrecognized years after its introduction and is only now being rediscovered.
To maintain this late-bloomer's attractive shape, Heptacodium must be pruned judiciously during the winter before flower buds have formed.
Heptacodium can be seen in the Chicago Botanic Garden’s Pullman Garden, where it thrives in dappled shade.

Heptacodium miconioides,or Seven Sons Flower is one of my most sucessfull new plants that I have grown lately.I have had no problems with it so far,no pests at all.
It is now a multi-stemed shrub, about 5 feet tall, and has flowered for at least 3 years. This growing season is the one I expect it to begin growing well since the stems are of good size in diameter...it takes plants a few years to establish themselves in the clay soil here, but once they do,they grow fast.

A transplanted tree from China with a warming soul
The history of heptacodium in America harks back to its discovery in 1907 by Ernest H. Wilson, during a plant expedition to western China for Harvard University's Arnold Arboretum.
As Koller points out, the word heptacodium ("hepta" being Greek for seven and "codium" meaning poppyhead) refers to the single flowers that are "born in a tiered six-flowered whorl that is terminated by a flower."
Originally called heptacodium jasminoides, this fragrant shrub is a member of the honeysuckle family.

Eagerly, we gathered the abundant and attractive fruits of the curious, upright shrub, and subsequently the ripened seeds were germinated at the Arnold Arboretum in Boston and in Washington, D.C., at the National Arboretum.
As strange as it may seem, Heptacodium jasminoides, now correctly identified as H. miconioides, became the horticulturally most important introduction of the 1980 Sino-American Expedition.
Even when its leaves have fallen to the ground, the shrub is attractive due to its pale tan, exfoliating bark, which lends winter interest to the plant.
