The first HMAS Melbourne, a Town-class light cruiser, saw action in World War I. The second HMAS Melbourne, the lead ship of her class of post-World War II light fleet aircraft carriers, was sold for scrap to China where she was studied to help design a Chinese aircraft career as she was broken up.

Apparently the original HMAS (Her Majestys Australian Ship) was a depot ship for Australia’s “J Class” submarines; while the submarines themselves left service in the late 1920s, Platypus herself continued to have a distinguished career through World War II and into the 50s.
In 1969 a new submarine base in Sydney was named HMAS Platypus in honor of the earlier ship, and continued in operation as the base for the “Oberon Class” submarines until December 15, 2000.
The first is the new logo you see at left, which as far as I can tell is a unit patch for HMAS Platypus in Australia.

As the two of us set foot on the solid steel of Her Majesty's Australian Ship we couldn't help but have a wide grin of relief across our faces.
Wondering whether we would ever make it to Darwin the calm and measured voice of the Coastal Watch Radio operator welcomed us into Australian Waters and within a few hours HMAS Launceston (pronounced Lawnsesston in Ozzie-speak!) was alongside us issuing calm instructions on our safest course to dry land.

I participated in the battles for Esther when officers of the wardroom of the Floyd B. Parks (DD-884), and one from the staff of Commander Destroyer Squadron 1 which was embarked in Parks, "seized Esther" by "Fair Means and Foul", from his Majesty's Australian Ship (HMAS) Shoal Haven.
The Parks wardroom corresponded with her and she mailed us a beautiful picture of herself in a print bathing suit signed, "My regards to all the fellows on the USS Floyd B. Parks, Esther Williams.
During the early occupation days in 1945-1946, the picture of Esther had been stolen from the cabin of an officer who claimed to be her fiance.
