In some of them the belief in their descent from Heracles seems to have arisen only from the fact, that the hero was worshipped by a particular tribe.
The leader of these Heracleidae was Hyllus, the eldest of the four sons of Heracles by Deianeira.
According to the Heracleidae of Euripides, the sons of Heracles were at first staying at Argos, and thence went to Trachis^ Thessaly, and at length to Athens.

So the dominion, which belonged to the Heracleidae, passed to the dynasty of Croesus, which was called "the Mermnadae." Candaules, whom the Greeks call Myrsilos, descendant of Alcaeos (son of Heracles), was the ruler of Sardis.
Agron, son of Ninos, son of Belos, son of Alkaeos, was the first of the Heracleidae to become king of Sardis, while Candaules, son of Myrsos, was the last one.
From those, the Heracleidae, took the dominion by means of an oracle, as descendants of a woman, slave of Iardanos, and of Heracles, ruling for twenty two generations of men, and five hundred and five years, son succeeding father in power, up to Candaules, son of Myrsos.

 Olympus
The Heracleidae felt proud in antiquity for having led the so-called "Descent of the Dorians" to the Peloponnese, that is for leading the migration of more northerly Greek tribes to the very centers of power of the Mycenean world in the Peloponnese.
The Heracleidae therefore led the so-called descent of the Dorians in their own return to the Peloponnese, since they themselves were not Dorians but descendants of the same nuclear core of Mycenean power in the north Peloponnese as the newer Mycenean dynasty which had exiled them from areas of Mycenean rule.
The tradition concerning the exile of the Heracleidae, a beloved subject of the ancients, is probably indicative of the well attested endemic disease of the Hellenic race, namely internal discord, which on this occasion led to instances of Mycenean resettlement amongst the most northerly of Greek tribes.

According to a myth based on an etymological fantasy, the Dorians were named for the minor district of Doris in northern Greece.
Their leaders were mythologized as the Heracleidae, the sons of the legendary hero Heracles, and the Dorian incursion into Greece in the distant past was justified in the mythic theme of the "Return of the Heracleidae".
The most famous of Dorian groups were the Spartans, whose austere and martial lifestyle was much admired and feared.
