Herb Caen's worst gaffe occurred entirely unintentionally when in his column he poked fun at a wealthy woman then living on one of San Francisco's famous hills.
Herb was unaware that one of the worst things you can say to a Samoan, other than that the Samoan's Adam's apple should be roasted in an earth oven ("Tau lou allelo"), is to compare that Samoan to a dog.
Herb sat at one end of the table, with several members of the paper's editorial board, including a man whom I think was the general editor.

The Gate is just the Chronicle's website, which didn't exist at the time that Caen was writing.

Written and signed by Herb Caen who wrote a column for the San Francisco Examiner for many years.
The jacket has some condition issues with wear and tears and does have one spot next to 1951 this looks like a drop of water, but the book itself is in excellent condition.
