SEED BANK-VEGETATION RELATIONSHIPS IN HERBACEOUS CAROLINA BAYS: RESPONSES TO CLIMATIC VARIABILITY   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The vegetation of four herbaceous depression meadow Carolina bay wetlands on the Upper Coastal Plain in the southeastern USA was sampled while systems were flooded in 1999 and again in 2002, near the end of a multi-year drought during which all bays were dry.
The results of the study were consistent with a cyclic model of herbaceous Carolina bay vegetation dynamics in which aquatic and grass species dominate in turn as climate oscillates between wet and dry periods.
Further, it appears that, in herbaceous Carolina bays, a handful of dominant aquatic and grass species in the vegetation may influence composition more strongly than widespread recruitment from the seed bank as hydrologic condition fluctuates.

herbaceous plant - HighBeam Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: )
herbaceous plant, plant whose stem is soft and green and shows little growth of wood.
Herbaceous plants, or herbs, as they are commonly called, may be annual —that is, the plants die after a year's growth, and the plants are propagated by seed—or they may be produced each year by new shoots from dormant roots.
The stems of woody plants, e.g., most shrubs and trees, are tough, are covered with nongreen bark, and enlarge in diameter by the accumulation of annual layers of wood produced by the cambium.

Herbaceous - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In botany, herbaceous refers to plants that have leaves and stems that die at the end of the growing season to the soil level.
The term is often used in reference to perennial plants, which have stems that die at the end of the growing season and new growth forms from the roots or from underground stems or from crown tissue at the surface of the ground.
Herbaceous is a term some times also used to describe parts of plants including leaves, branches and stems that have leaf-like texture and color.

NCDFR - WWW, Herbaceous Plants for Wildlife
Herbaceous plants are typically sun- loving, non-woody plants that occupy fields, road-sides and clearings.
Herbaceous strips are best created along existing fire lines, old woods roads, utility rights-of-way, and haul or skid roads.
The objective is to have herbaceous cover in the center strip or the travel portion of a road, and allow the daylighted edges to resprout to a shrubby or brushy stage.

IngentaConnect Herbaceous ecosystems on the Guayana Shield, a regional overview   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Ecosystems dominated by herbaceous plant communities are amongst the most diversified landscape units in the Guayana (Guiana) Shield region.
This paper aims to present a synthetic overview of the wide array of herbaceous ecosystems found in the region in an attempt to furnish a more concrete baseline for a better understanding of the pattern of variation, and to clarify some of the differences that occur in the vegetation of the area.
Sparsely distributed within this forest cover are numerous herbaceous ecosystems, ranging from true grass savannas to unusual and poorly understood meadows developed on extremely oligotrophic white sandy soils dominated by non-gramineous genera of Rapateaceae and Xyridaceae.

 Herbaceous Borders - Part Two
While the herbaceous borders of Victorian gardens were a nostalgic reaction against elaborate bedding schemes, very few gardeners confined themselves to those flowers which had been grown in seventeenth century gardens.
Jekyll's sophisticated ideas about the use of color influenced many herbaceous borders during the Edwardian age, more continued to be an unsophisticated mix of colors, not unlike the cottage gardens which she so admired.
Even the grandest herbaceous borders weren't necessarily complex from a designer's point of view, but they were always high maintenance.

The stems of herbaceous plants are soft and flexible and are typically found on annuals, which are plants that grow for only one season (such as most vegetables).
The herbaceous stem is composed of vascular bundles (xylem and phloem) arranged in a circle around a central core of spongy tissue; this spongy tissue is composed of parenchyma cells and is called the pith.
Surrounding the xylem and phloem is a layer known as the cortex, which varies in thickness from species to species; surrounding the cortex is the outermost layer of cells, which is called the epidermis.

Fall Blooming Bulbs   (Site not responding. Last check: )
In zones 6 or higher, spring- and summer-blooming herbaceous perennials are usually divided after bloom, either in late summer or in early fall as the foliage dies down.
Fall-blooming herbaceous perennials are usually divided in spring when the foliage is 2 to 3 inches tall, giving the plants an entire growing season to recover.
Some herbaceous perennials such as beebalm and chrysanthemum benefit from being divided every year, while other herbaceous perennials such as gas plant, false lupine, lavender, lenten rose, monkshood, oriental poppy, sea holly, and spurges are best left undisturbed as long as possible, or never divided at all.

 Herbaceous Weed Control
One of the most important yet often overlooked keys to a successful stand is proper herbaceous weed control.
Performed in the fall, winter or spring of planting, herbaceous weed control suppresses competitive grasses and weeds in the critical first growing season of a seedling’s life.
Most studies show that herbaceous weed control can increase survival and growth of a new stand by as much as 50 percent in the first year.

It's no secret that herbaceous perennials are making a strong impact on East Texas landscape thought.
Simply put, herbaceous perennials survive year to year from the same root.
While not exactly "herbaceous" (lacking woody tissue), they are utilized functionally in the landscape as perennials and return from the same root or crown region year after year.

 Landscaping: Herbaceous Perennials for Wyoming
Herbaceous perennials are non-woody plants which live more than two years and usually die back to the ground every fall.
They are important in Wyoming gar-dens and landscapes because of their diversity in flowering time, foliage color and texture, flower color and size, and winter interest.
Also, re-moving the tops of herbaceous plants after the fall die-back minimizes the trash and leaf-collecting capabilities of these plants.

Native and Naturalized Warm Season Herbaceous Texas Legumes for Forage. Dr. James (Jim) Pierre Muir Associate ...
We are interested in legumes for forage and range because they are generally high in digestible nutrients, especially nitrogen, which is low in most other plants.
For example, scarlet pea (pictured right) is a tenacious warm-season perennial that forms attractive mats of green and pink from April through October.
By using naturalized herbaceous legumes, we avoid introducing new potential weed species and we can often assume that naturalized legumes are well adapted to local soils, climate and insects if they have volunteered and spread on their own for decades.

Aphids are well-known as pests of agriculture, horticulture and forestry, but they are also one of the most biologically interesting groups of plant-feeding insects, and thus have attracted the attention of biologists in many research fields such as ecology, biodiversity, physiology, behaviour and genetics.
They can be used not only as an identification guide and information source for entomologists and taxonomists throughout the world, but also as a unique database for studies of biodiversity and insect-plant relationships.
Aphids on the World's Herbaceous Plants and Shrubs is the culmination of many years of work by two leading specialists and provides an essential research tool and standard reference work for entomologists in universities and research institutes throughout the world.

Within the British Isles the herbaceous Lavateras are normally known as Lavatera, rather than by an ancient vernacular name.
They are erose (irregularly truncated at the apex), in constrast to the bilobed petals of 'Rosea', usually spirally overlapping, and with a greater number of darker veins (~15).
This cultivar has a woody base, from which herbaceous top growth sprouts in autumn, and elongates in the flowering shoots the following spring.
