He built an improved prototype in early 1897 while working at the Maschinenfabrik Augsburg (from 1906 on the MAN) plant at Augsburg.
Diesel's engine had some similarities with an engine invented by Herbert Akroyd Stuart in 1890.
Diesel was embroiled for some years in various patent disputes and arguments over priority, but in the end he prevailed, and his invention came to be called the diesel engine.

Akroyd Stuart, Herbert (1864-1937): Although the invention of the compression ignition engine is commonly attributed to Dr Rudolph Diesel, the principles of this type of engine were first described in Akroyd Stuart's patent of 1890, two years before Diesel's patent.
By 1892 Akroyd Stuart's engines were being built by Richard Hornsby and Sons Ltd of Grantham and marketed as Hornsby-Akroyds.

Away from Vulcan, in 1892, Herbert Akroyd Stuart, who was born in Halifax on 28th January 1864, marketed the world's first successful oil engine.
His father, Charles Stuart, was a Scotsman from Paisley; who had established the Bletchley Iron and Tin Plate Works, in the county of Buckinghamshire.
Herbert’s first patent was taken out in 1866 after four years of experimenting ~ largely based on the ‘trial and error’ method of development.
