List of Sesame Street characters - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Harvey disappeared from Sesame Street, because of mixed public response to the character, and his laughing was too hard on Muppeteer Frank Oz's throat.
(1970-1973) Herbert appeared on the show, replacing Kermit the Frog as the Cookie Monster's and Grover's unofficial teacher.
Herbert was also a friend of Ernie and Bert, appearing in a number of sketches with the two of them.

It was a skit where Ernie was standing outside Herbert Birdsfoot's house, because he wanted to borrow his vacuum cleaner.
Herbert Birdsfoot was often used in skits to describe letters and numbers, and was often interrupted by Grover, kind of like Kermit the Frog in that aspect.
Herbert Birdsfoot is on the front of one of the Sesame Street records.

Herbert Birdsfoot: The next letter after "S" is "T".
Herbert Birdsfoot: So the people of the land tore down the towns and their towers, tossing out their trumpets and toys.
Herbert Birdsfoot: So the letter "T" was restored to the land, and so were the town's towers, the trumpets and the toys, which all goes to prove that you can't get away from the letter "T".

I know that Kermit won't be on Sesame Street again, because of the new format, and put back Herbert Birdsfoot on new lecture skits, street segments.
I also know that the "Ernie Borrows A Vacuum" sketch with Herbert would be after the Journey To Ernie segment.

I remember seeing skits with Kermit and Grover as well as Herbert and Grover in the same era and Grover even made reference to Herbert Birdsfoot in one of the Kermit skits.
Herbert Birdsfoot stayed on during Kermit's first season back (Season 3) but he left either after that, or at the end of the 4th Season.
Still, Herbert Birdsfoot was a part of my childhood and there are a lot of nostalgic memories about his skits with Grover.

Herry, The Count, Little Bird, Sherlock Hemlock, Roosevelt Franklin, and Herbert Birdsfoot all made debuts in this decade.
Roosevelt, an African-American puppet, would turn out to be one of the most popular characters, even spawning solo records.
