Herbert Hoover was the newly-inaugurated president and the '20s were still roaring.
One of Block's other famous targets was President Richard Nixon, with the cartoonist's criticism of the president reaching its peak during the Watergate break-in scandal in the early '70s.
Block garnered many accolades for his satire, including three Pulitzer prizes for editorial cartooning and a stake in a fourth Pulitzer, shared with his colleagues at the Post for their Watergate coverage.

Block died of pneumonia at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington.
It was Block who coined the word McCarthyism to describe the redbaiting tactics used by Senator Joseph McCarthy, and those cartoons were ranked No. 39 on a 1999 New York University list of 100 greatest works of journalism of the century.
Block put on numerous shows and published 10 books of his cartoons, plus an autobiography, Herblock: A Cartoonist's Life, that he tapped out on a manual typewriter.

Herbert Lawrence Block (October 13, 1909 – October 7, 2001), was a American editorial cartoonist.
He won three Pulitzer Prizes (1942, 1954, 1979) and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1994).
His personal assistant for 44 years was Jean Rickard, now Executive Director of the Herb Block Foundation, and chosen by Block himself to fill that position.
