Blomstedt hesitates more in this regard and seems to care more for orchestral sonority, so that at the climax, instead of the interplay of motives, we get an orchestral "swirly." Finally, Horenstein's performance just puts out more volts.

Dating back to his time as the chief conductor of the Dresden State Orchestra, Herbert Blomstedt has always been a supreme interpreter of Richard Strauss' music, and this recording of three of Strauss' famous symphonic tone poems that he made in the mid 90s with the San Francisco Symphony is proof of that.
Blomstedt and the orchestra shine in all three works--"Also Sprach Zarathustra"; "Death And Transfiguration"; and "Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks." The wit of "Eulenspiegel" is bought out quite well by the orchestra; and the metaphysical beauty of "Transfiguration" is something truly to behold, with a very poignant conclusion.
Blomstedt has been a distinguished Strauss interpreter for some time, and this recording is yet another demonstration of this.

Perceiving the symphony as retroactively haunted by its final movement, with its vision of paradise seen through the eyes of a child, Blomstedt tinged it with innocence in its entirety, to the point of sometimes cramping its emotional range.
Blomstedt glided round the terrors that intrude upon the slow movement's calm, although its closing moments had a matchless, magical serenity.

Blomstedt’s account of the Ninth is clear and methodical in its approach but there never seems to be a great deal behind the notes.
There is, for example, nothing maudlin or long-drawn about his treatment of the final Adagio, yet the sense of troubled nobility of utterance is everywhere there, right through to the slightly tremulous (though possibly inadvertent) quality of the horns’ long-held final chord.
This, however, is the only flaw in a performance that is otherwise remarkably similar to Tintner’s in its sense of the work’s mingled spirituality and drama but played by the Berliners with a power, spontaneity and depth of tone that neither of the rival orchestras can quite match.

Watching Blomstedt at work in this movement and elsewhere was a welcome reminder of just how little of that rambunctious puppy (or whatever other metaphor you’d care to name) the orchestra actually needs to see to get the sound of one.
The “canzona” of the slow movement was to Blomstedt’s mind a most simple and unaffected song, played most gracefully by the solo oboe and the other winds.
Blomstedt immediately walked back into the first row of players, seeking to take the applause as one of them, but here the affection of audience and orchestra was most evident.

Blomstedt does a good job of restraining the performers in the more lyric sections, such as "Chume, chume, geselle min" and "In trutina," to balance out the power of the many fast-and-furious movements.
Blomstedt whips up a huge amount of excitement with overall tempi on the brisk side, but still allows delicate sections to breathe, such as "In Trutina" (with the excellent soprano Lynne Dawson, who sounds clear and focused both here and throughout the recording).

Blomstedt's recording with the forces of the San Francisco Symphony and Chorus emphasizes the consolatory side of Brahms' Requiem, keeping things moving effectively in music that can easily seem heavy and lugubrious.
Blomstedt understands that Brahms wrote his requiem as a source of solace to the living and that it is supposed to be uplifting, not sad and slow.
