When Euro stalwart John Morghen (playing a character named Martin Romero!) figures in a gory, self-inflicted death scene, it's clear that an ancient evil is about to rise from the depths of history, driven by a loyal band of disciples.
Individual performances benefit, too, from the increased image resolution: Lom's already impressive turn certainly grows in stature, while Kelly Curtis seems better than ever, delivering one of the best female lead performances in 90s horror cinema as Miriam is prepared for the ultimate occult desecration.

The 1960s was also the decade in which Lom secured the role for which he will always be remembered: Peter Sellers' long-suffering boss Commissioner Charles Dreyfus in the "Pink Panther" films, in which he pulled off the not-inconsiderable feat of stealing scenes from a veteran scene-stealer like Sellers.
Lom didn't concentrate solely on a film career, however; he had become a familiar face to British TV viewers when he starred as Dr. Roger Corder in the series "The Human Jungle" (1963).
Lom appeared as one of the ten victims in And Then There Were None (1974), playing the drunken Dr. Armstrong.

The commanding Herbert Lom stars as a sadistic, corrupt inquisitor in this salacious exploitation thriller from Germany set in 18th-century Austria.
An early entry in the "sex and sadism" genre, this production is an exploitation film with an intelligence behind it, but an exploitation film nonetheless: director Michael Armstrong revels in the most barbarous tortures as the impotent inquisitor punishes innocent young maidens for his own unclean desires.
Strong performances from Lom, Kier, and Nalder and a cynical ending deliver a dramatic punch along with the grisly nastiness.

Bram Stoker's Count Dracula (1969) Christopher Lee, Herbert Lom, Klaus Kinski
One would expect that infamous director/misogynist Jess Franco would have one hell of a time with the Dracula legend, taking full advantage of the erotic and overtly sexual content of the tale.
Franco's 1969 feature starring Christopher Lee as the Count, Herbert Lom as Van Helsing, and Klaus Kinski as Renfield is a slow, chilling and fairly faithful rendering of Stoker's novel, sans the guts and breasts that have been trademarks of his over-analyzed career.
Those viewers familiar with the original novel (itself influenced by Dr. Polidari's short story, "The Vampyre") will notice a number of familiar elements throughout the story.
