		After the formation of Unity Theatre, Marshall directed some of its most acclaimed productions, among them Waiting for Lefty, The Aristocrats, and Plant in the Sun, starring Paul Robeson who was brought into Unity through his friendship with Marshall.
		Marshall later directed Robeson in a film, The Proud Valley (1941), and in 1949 they planned to open an all-Black professional theatre together.
		Marshall's affiliation with Unity was sometimes a stormy one, as can be seen from the correspondence in this collection.
