Herbert von Karajan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Herbert von Karajan was the son of an upper-bourgeois Salzburg family of Greek ancestry.
Karajan seemed to have opted instead for an all-purpose, highly refined, lacquered, calculatedly voluptuous sound that could be applied, with the stylistic modifications he deemed appropriate, to Bach and Puccini, Mozart and Mahler, Beethoven and Wagner, Schumann and Stravinsky...
Karajan's DG recording of Johann Strauss' An der schönen, blauen Donau (The Blue Danube waltz) was used by director Stanley Kubrick for a sequence in the science-fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey (with Kubrick animating the sequence to match the prerecorded music—the opposite of the usual practice for soundtracks).

Herbert von Karajan (April 5, 1908 - July 16, 1989) was a conductor, one of the most prominent of the postwar period.
He was born in Salzburg, Austria, as Heribert von Karajan in a Aromanian family that has its origin in Ioannina, Greece.
As was the case with soprano Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Karajan's membership in the Nazi Party from 1933 to 1945 cast him in an uncomplimentary light when revealed later, despite the apparent fact that he joined the party to advance his career rather than for ideological reasons.

Von Karajan (1908-1989), an Austrian-born conductor who was a controversial figure because of his membership in the Nazi party at an early stage of his career and because of his lifelong autocratic behavior, receives an exhaustive, penetrating biography.
Osborne is particularly good at showing the wide swings in the quality of von Karajan's performances, from the totally committed to the polished but banal; his material on the conductor's now largely forgotten efforts (to which he devoted large sums of his own money) to immortalize his performances on videotape is riveting.
Von Karajan is shown in all his glory and all his pettiness.

Herbert von Karajan, for many in the 1960s, 70s and 80s, was the conductor.
His recorded output was enormous; he remains deeply controversial among music-lovers, both for his alleged wartime activites (he belonged to the Nazi party) and for the consistency of his interpretations and the sheer beauty of the sound he summoned forth from the Berlin Philharmonic.

It was Karajan's own pet project to film as much as his repertoire as possible and he was the undisputed guiding artistic force, overseeing these productions with a rare passion.
Nevertheless, this concert was a triumph for Karajan who permitted the usual ballet sequences to overlay some of the music (wish he hadn't) and in fact insisted on the participation of the horses of the Spanish Riding School.

Herbert Von Karajan was somewhat of a pioneer in the field of the electronic recording of his orchestras, and was apparently known for pushing the envelope at any given time.
Consider the fact that Karajan was actively conducting orchestras in 1929, and went on to produce the first recordings for the brand spanking new CD format in April 1981, after he was already making fully digital recordings in 1980.

Karajan certainly looks back to the bold and dramatic Toscanini performances of old but what Karajan brings to the interpretation is that beauty of sound typically associated with him.
Karajan did later keep the repeat in his 1970's version, but then dropped it again for the digital 1980's version which is his worst Pastoral of all.
Karajan always conducted in the Toscanini trend of the fast flowing tempo in the allegretto, which bugs me because at a slower speed like that of Furtwangler the allegretto is much more communicative spiritually.

Karajan's account of both the second and third of the Honegger symphonies has never, and in my mind, will never be surpassed.

If Karajan continues to be such a looming presence in the classical music world today, then it is not only because of his more than 800 records and CDs, but also because of the many hours of video recordings which he produced over the course of many years - many of them with Unitel.
No less important to Karajan was the quality of the performers he chose to transmit his musical legacy to coming generations.

Review: Herbert von Karajan Conducts Sibelius
The only lasting legacy for which I'll credit von Karajan was introducing the world to the beautiful violin playing of Anne-Sophie Mutter and the conducting of Mariss Jansons.
I have heard many of Karajan's recordings, and I just don't understand what all the fuss is about; He tended to beat a mechanical tempo, was often more antiseptic than Lysol, and his execution at times downright sloppy.
He was one of those overemotional conductors, very concerned with his hands fluttering aloft like seagulls, his eyes always closed like he was in some kind of trance or sexual ecstasy (compare this to Toscanini, who communicated to the orchestra his will so directly with those intense, fiery eyes).

Richard Osborne draws on his own extensive conversations with Karajan, interviews with those who knew the conductor, and a treasure trove of primary sources to bring into focus the flamboyance and flaws of an extraordinary musician as well as the turbulent international music scene over six decades.
The author debunks many legends about Karajan, particularly those relating to his membership in the Nazi Party, which he opportunistically joined in 1935 to obtain a conducting appointment.
