Herberton was established in 1880 as part of the Herbert River tin mining field.
Herberton was the richest tin mining field in Australia at the time and boasted 20 hotels.
South east of Herberton is the Mt Hypipamee National Park which includes Mt Hypipamee Crater, a huge 61 metre diameter hole in the ground thought to be a volvanic vent, and Dinner Falls.
Jack and Newell and Brandon and Brown who first found tin in Herberton in the 1879-1880 period were perhaps mainly responsible for the finding of tin in other areas, Watsonville and in Irvinebank.
He lived in Herberton until 1882, when he made an overseas visit to his native land, and he also embraced the opportunity of investigating the tin mines in Cornwall, and the mining and smelting works in Belgium and Germany.
They arrived in Herberton about a week or so after their departure from Port Douglas, and the only other family that had reached there up to that period were the Bimroses.
