 Herbie Nichols...Living Tradition
The Herbie Nichols Project doesn't quite obtain the level of interpretive transcendence of Rudd or Baker; still, it is a record full of witty takes on Nichols.
Pianist Frank Kimbrough leads the Herbie Nichols Project in a similarly respectful and upbeat tour but trades off daring views in favor of a revealing classicism, especially given the conventional instrumentation on the date featuring alto sax, trumpet and rhythm trio.
Since Nichols never had the chance to arrange his music for a standard ensemble what keys this date are the arrangements including rareties never before heard in band versions.

Steve Lacy's discography: Change Of Season (Music Of Herbie Nichols)
Herbie Nichols' was a career that was maddeningly frustrating even for those of us who admired his music; for him it was a treadmill through a gauntlet, a ceaseless battle in which his only weapon, a talent that was too subtle for the casual listener and too demanding for the lazy improvisor, worked against him.
For this reason, we Herbie Nichols aficionados must applaud the excellent musicians who perform on this record and on Regeneration (SN 1054) which was devoted half to the compositions of Nichols and half to those of Thelonious Monk, Herbie's contemporary and soul mate.
Herbie Nichols was born in 1919 in New York City of West Indian parentage.

Herbie's tunes all have a classical feeling to them, even when he is playing "out of the box." The notes flow together like a classical piece, but most of his tunes are played with at least 2 or 3 notes out of the scale.
nichols was very much an individual and unique to his approach were a dark undercurrent to the writing owing to a preference for dissonant lower-register chords and, also, a willingness to experiment with basic song structures by adding tags and a variety of other devices.

Jazzmatazz Review - The Herbie Nichols Project - Strange City
Nichols was one of a number of creative pianists championed over the years by Blue Note producer Alfred Lion.
Nichols was recorded in trio settings by both the Blue Note and Bethlehem record labels in the 1950s, but never broke through to commercial success and had to take a lot of non-jazz gigs to survive.
Even earlier, in 1982, Nichols fan and soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy teamed with Dutch pianist Misha Mengelberg to record Regeneraton for Soul Note—one side of the LP had Nichols compositions, the other side had ones by Thelonious Monk.

Herbie Nichols is a perennially neglected jazz pianist and composer.
He knew Nichols when both were starting out in the New York jazz scene in the mid-'50s, and promised Nichols he would someday record his compositions with brass and strings.
It is fascinating to hear some of Nichols' harmonies unraveled; his own trio recordings require very close listening, especially to what the left hand is playing, to get a sense of the special nature of his music.

This week on Night Lights it's "Strange City: The Secret Music of Herbie Nichols." When pianist Herbie Nichols died of leukemia at the age of 44 in 1963, he left behind dozens of unrecorded compositions.
Some of them were entrusted to friend and trombonist Roswell Rudd, while others remained undiscovered for decades, until the efforts and detective work of a group known as the Herbie Nichols Project found them in the Library of Congress and elsewhere.
(Nichols recorded only a handful of LPs for the Blue Note and Bethlehem labels in the mid-1950s.) We'll hear music from all three of their CDs--LOVE IS PROXIMITY and DR. CYCLOPS' DREAM on the Soul Note label, and STRANGE CITY, the most recent recording (2001), released by Palmetto.

While a prolific composer of well over a hundred works (most of which have been lost), Nichols' recorded interpretations of his own work consist only of a series of piano trio recordings from the mid-50s.
Nichols' compositions displayed 'quirky' yet completely logical melodic twists, the integration of drum parts into melodic lines, and in particular demonstrated a variety of 'song forms' quite different from the standard 32-bar and blues forms still prevalent in the mid-50s.
During his career Nichols was largely considered to be a 'less eccentric Monk', although similarities in their musics and playing styles are largely superficial:

Review: The late pianist Herbie Nichols (1919-1963) was one of the great unsung jazz composers.
If Nichols were born 150 years earlier, he would've been hangin' in with the late 19th century Central European classical guys (think Bruckner), judging by the elegy-like, symphonic nature of the title track.

The small amount of recorded music that Nichols left behind was exclusively in the trio format, so it was interesting to hear Kimbrough be featured in similar vein on “Karna Kangi.” Never directly slavish to Nichols’ signature sound, Kimbrough nonetheless infused the entire performance with the kind of brash irreverence that marked Nichols’s best work.
