The HERBIE series was one of a handful of odd little titles published during the early and mid-60's by the (now defunct) American Comics Group; an outfit specializing in science fiction and horror "anthology" titles, for the most part.
Most fearsome of all, however, was the sight of an angered Herbie Popnecker -- lumbering towards his chosen opponent with glacial imperturbability -- with the dreaded "hard-to-find cinnamon flavor lollipop" clenched in one white-knuckled paw.
HERBIE enjoyed the monthly devotions of a fanatically loyal readership (of which number Your Narrator, I assure you,was amply proud to be counted) for many a year, during the greater portion of the 60's, outlasting any number of the more "serious" offerings from the American Comics Group.

 Don Markstein's Toonopedia: Herbie
"Herbie's Quiet Saturday Afternoon" was a typical ACG story, about a character despised by his peers (in this case, because he was a very fat and slow-moving little boy, and overly addicted to lollipops), but who has hidden depths.
He proved perfectly suited to Herbie (who, by the way, is said to have been based on Whitney's own appearance as a boy), depicting the "Little Fat Nothing" (as Herbie's father, Pincus Popnecker, often called him) as a profoundly dull slug, yet able to make the character work in action scenes.

Gilbert’s other four-page opus is even less clear-cut: an improv piece featuring Roy, a fat security guard with a bowl haircut that’s meant to recall sixties cult comic book hero Herbie Popnecker.
Built on a series of tiny panels (fifty-five to a page) that admittedly were a strain for this bifocal-wearing reader, “30,000 Hours to Kill” follows Roy’s misadventures as he is unjustly jailed for a crime he didn’t commit.
As a character, Roy tends to react more than initiate — in this sense he’s much like the aforementioned Herbie (though Roy typically has a more avuncular affect than the expressionless fat boy).
