		Today the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS), in cooperation with the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), released the results of blood lead testing conducted in 2002 on residents of Herculaneum, Missouri.
		It is believed that Herculaneum residents are at higher risk for blood lead poisoning because of the Herculaneum Lead Smelter facility.
		A review of the 2002 blood lead data for Herculaneum residents showed a marked reduction in the percentage of children with elevated blood lead levels compared with blood lead levels in children tested in 2001.

		In Herculaneum, about 30 miles south of St. Louis, all the playgrounds are closed and signs warn children not to play on the streets.
		The EPA said the Doe Run Co. smelter has polluted earth, air and water with lead, and it is asking more than 90 families to move out of their homes while their yard soil is replaced and houses cleaned up.

		St. Louis, MO (PRWEB) October 3, 2006 -- The Doe Run Company announced today that its Herculaneum, Mo., smelter facility exceeded the National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) for lead in the third quarter of 2006 at the Broad Street monitor.
		While nine of 10 air monitoring stations have consistently met the standard, this single monitor, located 200 yards west of the facility, has been slightly over or under the standard since the 2000 State Implementation Plan (SIP) was completed in July 2002.
		According to data collected by Doe Run, final third-quarter results from strategically positioned air monitors in Herculaneum ranged from 0.1 to 1.6 micrograms of lead per cubic meter of air, placing the area just outside the EPA-specified air quality standard of 1.5 micrograms of lead per cubic meter of air (averaged over a calendar quarter).
