If Leo Sayer's first two albums were only intermittently wonderful, both displayed more than enough promise to make Another Year, his third, one of the biggest disappointments of 1975.
Sayer is a singer and lyricist only; until this LP, David Courtney, who coproduced two albums with Adam Faith, wrote all of the music.
Leo Sayer needs to do some strong thinking about his future, which should be limitless.

Searching for hits in the '70s, Leo Sayer became a tender balladeer, an Elton John wannabe, a falsetto-voiced disco crooner, and a straightforward pop "entertainer." Remarkably, Sayer was good was at everything-from the Tin Pan Alley pop to the power ballads.
Sayer has kind of strange voice and it takes a little getting used to, but it is not unpleasant and he sounds a bit different from song to song, unlike some artists where every song sounds the same.
Leo Sayer came out when I was a teenager and I will always remember him on Don Kirschner's Rock Concert, dressed as the sad clown, singing "The Show Must Go On".

Reunited with David Courtney, the producer of his first American hit "Long Tall Glasses (I Can Dance)" from 1975's Just A Boy LP, Leo Sayer 's first album after three with Richard Perry yielded no significant hits in America, but is a refined and entertaining chapter in the minstrel's history.
Sayer had gotten into a good groove as an interpreter and may have benefited by resurrecting other, more popular titles.
With the Phil Spector sheen that influenced Billy Joel and Eddie Money, "Takin' the Easy Way Out" is a perfect closer, and might have become a Leo Sayer staple had FM radio stayed progressive.

In fact, it would not be outrageous to lump this in with other "concept" albums from the 70s, as most of the songs present revolve around Leo's "Coming of age" within the music industry.
As with any Leo album, there is a certain amount of vaudeville present ("Long Tall Glasses"), but also included are some ballads ("Bells of St. Mary's"), some almost psychedelic rock ("Telepath"), and a certain amount of straight out rock ("One Man Band").
This re-release finally allows the Leo fan to grab this album which, until now, was rather hard to find and almost exclusively available on LP.

Leo Sayer's debut album introduced a singer/songwriter (actually he wrote just the lyrics; David Courtney did the music) of some talent, though not remarkable talent.
The production screams 1973, with its mainstream pop and hard rock beds and some overlays of symphonic strings, and Sayer sometimes strongly echoes Elton John's early-'70s work, with some hints of David Bowie as well.
As a teenager, he lived in Sunderland, where he sang lead in a group called the Fireflies and took up the drums when their regular drummer quit.

Six months later, Sayer's debut, Silverbird, was released to tremendous acclaim in England and modest response in the States.
A sumptuously produced album, Silverbird suggested that the trio of Adam Faith (producer), David Courtney (coproducer and composer) and Leo Sayer (singer/lyricist) might establish themselves as commercial rivals to Elton John/Bernie Taupin/Gus Dudgeon.
But the most impressive aspect of Silverbird was Sayer's singing, his ability to adopt different vocal styles to personify "split" personalities.
