  NRDC Press Archive: Sonar Lawsuit Settlement: Navy Will Limit Needless Harm to Whales
The settlement comes four days after the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and other organizations won a restraining order temporarily blocking the use of mid-frequency sonar during the eight-nation Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercises until better safety procedures were in place.
Requires the Navy to have at least one dedicated and three non-dedicated marine mammal observers on every surface sonar vessel during all sonar drills, and to add an additional dedicated marine mammal observer during the three exercises occurring in channels between the islands;
The U.S. Navy later acknowledged in an official report that its use of sonar was the likely cause of the stranding.

Today Canada's navy has to make do with Sea King choppers that have airframes that are beyond the legal limit of endurance and are held together with what the Prairie farmers of the Dirty Thirties used on their equally outdated equipment - bailing wire and a lot of gut-wrenching fear.
To die onboard a ship at sea as hunks of rotor blades slash off heads and hands and legs and other bits of an outdated war machine from an earlier era cover the area with hot, molten metal is not the martyr's way to claim headlines round the world.

merican bluejackets and Marines were without official medals or other visible signs of their overseas service or combat for the first 120 years of the Navy's existence, since orders, medals and decorations were seen as the trappings of royalty and empire and ran contrary to the republican spirit present at the founding of our country.
The U.S. Navy followed suit on 27 June 1908, authorizing a series of "badges" for service as distant in time as the Civil War, the Spanish-American War and the Boxer Rebellion.
