Today (song) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Today" is a popular song by The Smashing Pumpkins (then known as simply Smashing Pumpkins).
Still, this darker side of the song is partially hidden in the soft instrumental part that is played in the verses, which made many listeners unaware of the song's tale of depression and desperation.
The song also appeared on the band's greatest hits album Rotten Apples.

 Art Songs & Song Cycles
Some songs may be strophic, in which a tune is repeated for each stanza (in the manner of church hymns); or through-composed (or durchkomponiert) in which there are different musical settings for each stanza, usually adding more drama to the song.
But the art song as we know it today began with Franz Schubert, whose extraordinary compositions for one voice and piano along with his prodigious song output revolutionized the German Lied at the turn of the 19th century (see Schubert and Lieder).
Today, the art song is alive and well in America.

The work's power derives from the use of a simple yet engaging direct address and, surprisingly, from the use of artwork which serves to enhance the narrative by adding visual dramatization.

Terry Teachout's recent articles in Commentary on the American popular song testify to a wonderfully rich tradition of melodic and harmonic inspiration, which is scarcely separable from the development of modern music generally.

Song for Today isn't mind-blowing, but it's a decent debut from a "Young Lion" who isn't without potential.
To his credit, Fries wrote about half of the tunes on Song for Today, and he also deserves credit for interpreting songs that haven't been done to death in the jazz world.
