The term "video game" is often not considered to include computer games and coin-operated arcade games, both because historically the games in these three categories were very different, and also because the activity of playing these three types of games is different.
Video games are made by developers, sometimes individuals, but almost always a team consisting of designers, graphic designers and other artists, programmerss, sound designers, musicians, and other technicians.
Video games are very popular and the market has grown continuously since the end of the video game crash of 1983.

Heretic (video game) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Heretic is a fantasy first-person shooter computer game created by Raven Software, published by id Software, and distributed by GT Interactive in 1994.
It's notable that besides background music, the game also used randomized ambient sounds and noises to further enhance the atmosphere, such as evil laughter, chains rattling, water dripping, etc. All music in the game was composed by Kevin Schilder.
The next game in the HeXen/Heretic universe, HeXen II, was released in 1997 and was based on a modified Quake engine.

Heretic II met a firestorm of contention when it was announced because of its non-linear continuation of the series' narrative.
After defeating D'Sparil at the end of the first game Corvus was banished to the outer realms -- an unpleasant locale on a good afternoon let alone a bad one -- and cursed to roam the desolate and lethal wasteland for the rest ofhis life.
Gorgeous and dramatic rendered cutscenes bookend the game and do a commendable job of establishing the main character and the nature of the game.

Heretic II goes back to the original storyline and to the single main character, rather than the three separate character classes from the Hexen series.
Although Heretic II is based on the same engine as Quake II, there have been so many improvements added that the underlying engine is almost unrecognizable.
Even the violence in the game is lovingly rendered -- all the enemies die in spectacular gouts of blood and gore (this is not a game for younger kids).

The Two Towers Video Game - IIDB
The game features footage from the first two films and is really cool because you see the prologue to a big battle (like Helm's Deep) and then it transitions into pixels and the controls are handed over to you.
If gamers were as whiney then about the length of games as they are now, no one would ever have bought video games, hence leading to the utter collapse of the industry.
Games like System Shock 2 and Deus Ex are pretty much the exception to the rule when it comes to PC games, where click-fests (fun click-fests, to be sure, but shallow and superficial nonetheless) like Diablo 2 and action games like UT2003 and Quake 3 dominate the gaming market.

 Idle Thumbs: I Kill You
I'm not suggesting that the "video games make kids kill people" claims have any legitimate merit, but here's the rub: it is simply going to become harder and harder to defend against them when the entire industry still has the prime directive of inflicting virtual violence.
The medium of games clearly has the ability to support successful experiments in storytelling that are not necessarily founded on extinguishing lives in order to progress.
If at least a little more of the game industry was devoted to less violent works of storytelling, claiming that games are not a form of expression (already a ludicrous proposition) would be all the harder.
