The album sounds cleaner and smoother around the edges than the original mix, and the bells at the end of side one had apparently been re-recorded as they now actually were in tune.
His later albums consisted mostly of disposable pop-tunes with one or two half-hearted "epics" thrown in as an attempt to still keep his old fans interested, and this trend started actually with "Platinum" that was released already later in '79.
After one album and a compilation of singles, the four-piece band were reduced to a trio consisting of keyboardist Toni Pagliuca, drummer Michi Dei Rossi and singer, bassist and guitarist Aldo Tagliapietra.

The version of Orchestral Hergest Ridge on Side 1 includes 2 minutes of Part 1 and most of Part 2, with the Martian Song (also known as the "thunderstorm"), spliced in from the original album version.
Hergest Ridge on early LPs is the original mix, some Hergest Ridge LPs pressed after 1976 and all the Hergest Ridge CDs contain the Boxed remix (see 2.12).
Now, we can argue whether Hergest Ridge is too repetitive or not, but the original mix fans should note that the parts that were deleted were only added for commercial reasons, not because Mike thought they should be there.

I admit though that, perhaps because my original introduction to Hergest Ridge was from the later version, my perspective could equally be as skewed as the older listeners.
Hergest Ridge represents Mike trying to cope with the fame that came with Tubular Bells, therefore it has a kind of gentle side and a harder side (particularly the sped up guitar in pt 2).
I used to love this album, but hearing the CD it sounds to me like someone forgot to plug in one of the stereo channels when mixing it.

Hergest Ridge - Mike Oldfield, Music Downloads - Online
Review: Released as another lengthy composition, Hergest Ridge was the album that followed Mike Oldfield's momentous Tubular Bells release, with many of the same instrumental elements and methods employed throughout its two sections.
Symphonic throughout most of the album's two parts, the highlight of Hergest Ridge is Oldfield's use of 90 multi-tracked guitars which are clustered together to create one of the most unique sounds ever to surface on his albums.
The album was highly regarded in the U.K. upon its release and it continues Oldfield's creativity, proving that the genius put forth on his claim-to-fame album would indeed have some effect on works to come.

For Oldfield, the solution was rather simple: keep the concept of one song on the album, but make the overall feel of the piece more gentle, as if you can feel the spring breezes while looking over the countryside on a cliff.
In fact, Hergest Ridge is a very relaxing disc to listen to, and is one I've occasionally turned to in order to relieve the stresses of the day.
Hergest Ridge is not an album you'll easily find, but it is most definitely worth the search.

Intuitive Music » Blog Archive » 20th Anniversary of Mike Oldfield’s “Hergest Ridge”
“Hergest Ridge” was one of the most experimental Rock albums from the 70’s, which featured big doses of sound experimentation influenced by concrete music, like Mike Oldfield climbing on the lid of the piano to get the kind of echo/reverb effect from the resonance of the piano strings.
“Tubular Bells” and “Hergest Ridge” were premiered with a Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1974 and Steve Hillage replaced Mike Oldfield on guitar due to ‘illness’ (it was later known that Mike Oldfield suffered from stage fright).
In 1976 “Hergest Ridge” was remixed in quadraphonic sound by Mike Oldfield for the release of Virgin 4 LP set ‘Boxed’ which was used for all future releases of the album.

Writing 'Hergest Ridge', he seems to have paid more attention to using chord sequences as a mode for the progression of the long piece, and since he succeeds very well it gives the listener the sense that this is better written than its predecessor.
The album reached number one in the UK album charts when it was released but, a week later, was displaced by its predecessor, which had spent almost year climbing up the charts.
Hergest Ridge is nowadays totally overshadowed by Tubular Bells, which is a shame because it's my favourite Oldfield album.

Ground and Sky review - Mike Oldfield - Hergest Ridge
The music continues sedately, and this would be one of the ultimate albums to go to sleep by at night, were it not for the fact that the mood is shattered part way through the second half with what is often referred to as the "storm" section.
Normally a louder section on an otherwise quiet album would serve as a wonderful release, but here the music is poor; and rather than being a liberating part of the album, it is just plain irritating.
Mike Oldfield's first three albums are considered his classic trilogy, and for me this album deserves its place there, even if I consider it to be the least of the three.

In common with many people, I suspect, the first time I heard of Hergest Ridge was in the mid-70s, when Mike Oldfield released his second album bearing the name of this whalebacked hill on the Herefordshire - Radnorshire border (the first, I hardly need add, was Tubular Bells).
Curiously, it was the album "Ommadawn" released the following year that contained the song "On Horseback", which suggests "...if you you feel a little glum, To Hergest Ridge you should come".
Offa's Dyke path runs the length of the ridge - there is no problem with pathfinding - and leads inexorably over the Welsh border and down into the little village of Gladestry and the Royal Oak.

His first album after the seminal Tubular Bells, Mike Oldfield's Hergest Ridge dips into decidedly Celtic waters.
The best thing about this epic two-part composition is that it really does take one on a journey - the main themes and motifs are developed, come to a climax, and then put on the back burner while other themes come to the fore, and everything reappears toward the end for a surprisingly laid-back summation.
There really aren't any drawbacks; this kind of longform composition has fallen into disuse these days, so those looking for convenient places to take a break may be a little put off by the length of the tracks.
