  The Northern Ireland Assembly - Minutes of Evidence: Railway Safety Bill
Her Majesty’s Railway Inspectorate will advise the Department whether or not the safety case is acceptable as it stands, needs certain amendments or, in the worst possible scenario, needs to be completely reworked.
Northern Ireland Railways would then operate that safety case and would be required to obtain annual audits.
We must ensure that Northern Ireland Railways is in a position to produce its safety case and to have it audited and inspected before the introduction of safety case regulations.

I presume that Northern Ireland Railways would say they can't maintain stations that are large and require regular maintenance and sadly they have often replaced handsome stations with something more like bus stops.
Marcus Patton: Northern Ireland has always been twenty or thirty years behind the times even in the 18th century we were behind the times.
While perhaps we have a less interesting heritage from the twentieth century than we inherited from the nineteenth it is often hard to appreciate buildings until they have been around for a period of time and their strangeness has become familiar.

Ireland once had one of the most extensive railway systems outside Great_Britain but it now has a greatly reduced network (see History_of_rail_transport_in_Ireland).
The route was commenced in 1848 by the Waterford_&_Limerick_Railway and finished in 1854 – one of the oldest routes in Ireland, and the first approved by the British parliament.
The line, built by the former Limerick and Foynes Railway from 1856-1858, is the remains of the former line which was extended from a junction at Rathkeale via Newcastle_West and Listowel to Tralee by the former Limerick and Kerry Railway.

Although there is not an actual heritage railway in Whitehead, there are regular railtours with the preserved stock running to various destinations in Ireland.
The project has faced some difficulties, but does hold a quantity of preserved railway stock, on part of one of Derry city's closed railway routes (the city once had four stations).

An NI Railways leaflet offered thanks to the public for their political support in securing inclusion in the provincial Assembly's budget of an additional GBP20M for the railway in 2001-02, which should allow a start to be made on relaying track on the Belfast - Bangor line and on ordering 23 new trains.
The trip is to commemorate completion of the standard-gauge Trans Australian Railway on 25 October 1917, which fulfilled the federal promise made to the state of Western Australia when the Commonwealth of Australia became a unified nation on 1 January 1901.
Presumably the railway has been starved of investment because neither country is motivated to spend much on it as a link with the other.
