Ireland is known for its misty green countryside, its culture and tradition (including legends and folklores), and its warm-hearted and friendly people.
In 1949, it became the Republic of Ireland and withdrew from the Commonwealth.
Ireland's literary heritage lives throughout the country, from Yeat's grave, up north in Sligo, to "The Great Book of Ireland", published in 1991, a single volume containing work by 140 poets, 120 painters and 9 composers., which is on display at Trinity College in Dublin.

All railway operators in Northern Ireland including light and heritage railways are required to comply with all new regulations introduced by the Department to further improve railway safety.
In some circumstances heritage railways operating on their own tracks and at a line speed that does not exceed 25mph may be exempted from some of the more onerous regulations where the Department is satisfied that the safety of passengers and the general public is not compromised.
Of these railways The Railway Preservation Society of Ireland (RPSI) is the only heritage operator that currently has excess to the main line network for special excursion trips.

 Railways
Ireland's railway system, most of it built to the unusual gauge of 5ft 3ins.,began in 1834 with the construction of the Dublin-Kingstown (now Dun Laoghaire) line, deemed the first commuter railway in the world.
In the Irish Republic which has by far the largest route mileage, the operator is Iarnrod Eireann (Irish Rail), which is a subsidiary company of Coras Iompair Eireann (Irish State Transport Company) who also operate bus services through Bus Eireann (provincial coach services) and Bus Atha Cliath (Dublin Bus).
In Northern Ireland, the railways are operated by Northern Ireland Railways Ltd.,a subsidiary of the holding company Translink, which also operates bus services.Both companies assist private societies in running steam and early diesel trains, and in preserving infrastructure.

The Railway Preservation Society of Ireland is a registered charity and was formed in 1964 to operate and preserve in working order steam locomotives and coaches which were disappearing rapidly from the Irish Railway system.
The DRM is the only preserved Irish Standard Gauge (5 ft 3 in) railway operating in Northern Ireland and is based on the former Belfast and County Down Railway terminus in Downpatrick, the County Town of Down.

 Context for World Heritage Bridges
A World Heritage bridge, like other properties, must meet the test of authenticity in design, materials, workmanship, or setting (the Committee has stressed that reconstruction is only acceptable if carried out on the basis of complete and detailed documentation of the original artefact and to no extent on conjecture).
Designed by George Stephenson for the first railway, the 37 miles (23km) between Stockton and Darlington in north-east England, it consists of four 12.5ft (4m) lenticular truss spans with curved top and bottom chord members of 2.5in (6cm) diameter wrought-iron rods and five vertical iron posts cast integrally with the wrought-iron chord members.
In India, for example, the British built several long-span railway bridges, such as the Hooghly and the Sukkur bridges which exceeded 1000ft (300m) in span and are interesting because they were constructed using the simplest equipment and armies of unskilled labour.

An NI Railways leaflet offered thanks to the public for their political support in securing inclusion in the provincial Assembly's budget of an additional GBP20M for the railway in 2001-02, which should allow a start to be made on relaying track on the Belfast - Bangor line and on ordering 23 new trains.
The trip is to commemorate completion of the standard-gauge Trans Australian Railway on 25 October 1917, which fulfilled the federal promise made to the state of Western Australia when the Commonwealth of Australia became a unified nation on 1 January 1901.
Presumably the railway has been starved of investment because neither country is motivated to spend much on it as a link with the other.

This narrow-guage railway is accessible from Dromod station on the Dublin-Sligo line and the N4 Dublin-Sligo road.
A heritage narrow gauge railway follows over 6km of the route of the abandoned Waterford -Dungarvan line.
It has some difficulties in that it based in Northern Ireland but the former railway extended into Co Donegal in the Republic of Ireland, so it needs to develop as a cross-border project.

The “Darjeeling Himalayan Railway” which was previously inscribed on the World Heritage List, is part of the “Mountain Railways of India”.
