Hermagoras organized these concepts in the second century B.C.E. Focusing on the forensic arena, he modified Aristotle's questions under the more familiar headings of conjecture, definition, quality, and objection.
Hermagoras added a new fourth question, concerning the appropriateness of the proceedings in which the determination is being made.
He then refers back to the four categories of Aristotle and Hermagoras, referring to these four categories as four stages of stasis, ranging from a wide area of dispute through increasingly narrower areas, so that the proceeding of the argument is through a series of narrower and narrower points of agreement.
