Tortoises are not too hard to look after, and they do not really need much exercise.
I have two tortoises, and in the summer, when it is hot, their shells are like solar panels, and they soak in the sunlight and speed off into the distance...
In the bad old days, when tortoises were imported in their thousands and a couple made it to the pet shop in one piece, my politically incorrect mother decided to get me and my sister one each as pets.

Thinking of a baby tortoise   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The practices routinely established in most peoples idea of tortoise husbandry may in the very least need some refinement, and for this reason the first advice we give to people thinking of getting a tortoise is to try to forget all you think you know and start again.
Tortoises in the wild rarely hibernate for more than 6-10 weeks and the naturally much longer hibernations that would occur naturally in this climate are detrimental to the tortoises long-term.
Either way they are a very large tortoise and due to their capacity to dig and their requiring indoor winter accommodation they are a very large undertaking in terms of space and time.

Modern Tortoise Husbandry   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The practices laid down on this sheet are designed to optimise the chances of your tortoise reaching the old age that should be expected of all tortoises and not being one of the unfortunate thousands that have died over the last few decades.
The second point is that many of these tortoises survive rather than thrive and are prone to infections, bone deformity, diarrhoea, poor shell growth, walking difficulties and many more chronic conditions that lead to their premature demise and a relatively miserable existence.
Probably over 90% of the adult UK tortoise population is calcium deficient to some extent and this along with infections due to excessively low temperatures accounts for most hatchling tortoise deaths in the UK.

In the summer, you can either build a enclosure to keep the tortoise in, just to go for a walk during the day when its hot (this is what i do), or you can build a suitable enclosure for the tortoise to live in pernimently throughout the summer.
Many tortoise develop long nails and if there is a flat rock of some sort in their tank or enclosure then, it will facilitate normal nail wear, and their nails will not get too long.

we have a hermans tortoise that is about 15cm across and we want to buy another one to keep him company.
a Spurred tortoise from the arid subsaharan Africa and those of a Hingeback from the deep tropical forests of the western and central parts of the same continent, are doomed to condemn at least one, and most likely both tortoises to a slow death.
The breeding behaviour in many species is quite rough, involving butting, biting and ramming, and while a female of the same species is 'built' for that particular type of rough handling, a female of another species is most likely not equipped to come out of such an ordeal unharmed.

Hermanns tortoises are herbivores and in the wild consume a wide variety of flowers, leaves, and plant stalks.
